Booten Herndon, 79, an author and free-lance writer, died Wednesday in Charlottesville, Va., after a long illness. He wrote dozens of books and thousands of articles. Among his works were "Ford: An Unconventional Biography of the Men and Their Times," "Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks," "The Seventh Day," "Rickenbacker," "Over the Hump," and "Young Men Can Change the World."Carl Jefferson, 75, a Grammy-winning music producer who founded the Concord Jazz Festival in 1969, died Wednesday of liver cancer in Concord, Calif.

Danial "Danny" Reese, a former Baltimore broadcaster who was known as "Old Blue Eyes" and whose radio career spanned two decades, died April 28 from a heart attack at his Naples, Fla., home. He was 61. "I got to know Danny when we worked together at WCAO. We did mornings together and just clicked," said Ron Matz, a veteran Baltimore radio personality who is now a WJZ-TV reporter. "We were both friends on and off the air and remained so," said Mr. Matz. ""Danny was a very popular on-air personality who got Baltimore.

Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. has accused the Federal Communications Commission in court documents of dragging its feet on granting the transfer of 15 TV licenses as a reprisal for the company's not using "race as the criterion for selling their stations." The applications for transfers were made a month after an FCC official said the agency would make it "really painful" for Sinclair unless the company did "something" to increase minority ownership in broadcasting, the court documents said.
