Jim Palmer had retired after a month in 1984. Al Bumbry and Ken Singleton were released after that season. Cal Ripken needed big hands to carry all the torches that were passed to him in 1985. Given additional responsibilities with the loss of some trusted veterans, Ripken placed first or second on the team in 12 offensive categories. Continuing to redefine his position, Ripken also led major-league shortstops in home runs, RBIs, runs and slugging percentage. And, of course, a consecutive-games streak kept building.

Before Orioles fans get a peek at their current team as it takes shape in spring training, they can revisit the past and remember better times. Leave the sunscreen at home. Members of the Orioles' 1983 World Series championship team, including Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. and Eddie Murray, will sign autographs this weekend as part of Baseball's Best memorabilia show at the Baltimore Convention Center. The event, believed to be the first of its kind in the area, begins today and concludes Sunday.

Record night Rarely does a walk get so much attention, but Kevin Millar received a loud ovation because of one. Millar has reached base in 50 consecutive games, breaking Ken Singleton's club record. He checked his swing on a 3-1 pitch in the fifth, took a step toward first base and froze when plate umpire James Hoye called a strike. The next pitch was inches off the plate, and Millar again checked his swing, but first base umpire Chris Guccione ruled it a ball. Fans stood to applaud. Long ball Aubrey Huff has 10 RBIs in his past eight games, a total he padded last night with a bases-empty homer in the second inning.
