Talk to just about anyone who's been involved in Carroll County sports, and chances are they'll know a Ken Parker story.Mine goes back a few years. I was shopping in a small Westminster chain store whenI happened to see Parker and his wife, Nancy. We wound up talking for at least 30 minutes. Nothing important, just small talk -- the weather, South Carroll in general, a little about his football program and my job.It was a friendly chat with a couple of friendly people. And that's the legacy Parker leaves behind as he retires as the only football coach in the first 25 years ofSouth Carroll High.

* Francis Scott Key (0-10) -- Senior leadership is sparse, wit just 6 seniors on the team, and the likely starting QB is sophomore Matt Haines. With 4 possible state tournament teams on their Monocacy Valley Athletic League schedule, the Eagles face an uphill climb.* Liberty (4-6) -- Liberty has 1 starter back -- DB/SE Gray Johnson -- but coach John Magee hopes the strong showing defensively last year (23 forced turnovers) is something to build on. It's doubtful the Lions can break into the upper echelon of the Central Maryland Conference.

It appeared to be just another highly successful season for the South Carroll Cavaliers.A 12-2 record, their seventh straight county title and another region playoff appearance. But it was a bit more than that for coach Gene Brown, who stepped down after 15 years at the helm.Brown, who leaves as The Baltimore Sun's 1993 Boys Lacrosse Coach of the Year in Carroll County, replaced a legend in Ken Parker as the Cavaliers football coach last fall. Next spring, it will be someone else's turn to replace a coach who enjoyed much of the same kind of success Parker did.Brown compiled a 139-56 record and 10 county titles in 15 years as lacrosse coach.
