Even when Centennial's volleyball team isn't performing at peak efficiency, the Eagles are usually too tough for their competition.Take last night's 15-7, 15-9, 15-6 victory over Atholton. The Eagles sputtered at times with their serves, recording a season-high nine service errors, including four in a sloppy second game. In the first game, they allowed Atholton to turn a healthy 10-1 Centennial lead into an uncomfortable 10-7 advantage. But in the end, Centennial had all the answers -- solid passing, great defense and the potent front row of Shannon Saltzman, Laura Taneyhill and Carly Cangiano.

While he was sharing drinks and talking shop at a favorite watering hole, Kelly Smith and a co-worker were joined by a mechanic who told them of a funeral he'd recently attended. His friend, he said, had been buried with cartons of cigarettes, a Zippo lighter and an issue of Playboy magazine. Smith wasn't surprised. The Atholton Raiders made their mark in volleyball last year with a young team that stumbled early, grew up quickly, and when it counted most, was strong enough to land in the Class 2A state playoffs. After losing several starters to graduation and forming one of the moreyouthful teams he's had in his seven years at Atholton, Coach Jon Peterson envisioned the same type of season from the Raiders this year.At this early stage, the Raiders may have fooled their mentor. With Friday's 15-11, 15-13, 15-9 victory over Howard, Atholton improvedits record to 3-1 overall, 2-1 against the county.
