I WONDER HOW MANY Carroll County children know the true meaning of Memorial Day? Certainly, they know that Memorial Day is a day off from school and work, a day for picnics, family get-togethers, hot dogs and friendship. The Washington Capitals know their position against Pittsburgh in the NHL Patrick Division finals all too well.Just two weeks ago in the semifinal round against the New York Rangers, the 2-1 series deficit was identical, with Game 4 on tap at the Capital Centre.Well, almost."Yes, we were down 2-1 in that series but we were embarrassed [6-0] in the third game," defenseman Rod Langway said. "Actually, this is a better situation. We know what happened against the Rangers, so it's not time to start counting us out yet. We never said this would be a five-game series."

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- If you want to judge where the Washington Capitals are, watch how they react if they manage to take a two-goal lead against the Ottawa Senators tonight. They insist they have learned their lesson about losing leads, but they still showed signs of carelessness over an otherwise successful weekend. On Friday night, they permitted two goals in 14 seconds at the end of their home blowout of the New York Rangers. Saturday night at Nassau Coliseum, they gave up a two-goal lead before escaping with a 5-3 victory against the New York Islanders.

It's been nearly four months since a 17-year-old Fairfax, Va., girl accused four members of the Washington Capitals of sexual assault in the back of a limousine outside of a bar in Georgetown.Six weeks after the initial media blitz on the four suspects -- Scott Stevens, Geoff Courtnall, Dino Ciccarelli and Neil Sheehy -- a grand jury decided not to pursue the case. There was no prosecution, no trial, no jury, no case. But unlike Stevens and Courtnall, who have moved on to the St. Louis Blues, Sheehy and Ciccarelli might be forced to face a different kind of trial.
