The National Hockey League has suspended Washington Capitals center Michal Pivonka for three games without pay and fined him $1,000, the maximum allowed under its collective bargaining agreement. The penalty was assessed for a high-sticking incident involving Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kjell Samuelsson in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series on May 18.The suspension will take effect at the start of the 1995-96 season."Although Mr. Pivonka has not previously faced supplementary discipline for this type of conduct, there can be no excuse for the reckless manner in which he struck and injured Mr. Samuelsson with his stick," said Brian Burke, NHL senior vice president.

NEW YORK -- The Washington Capitals walked down the middle of East 39th Street yesterday, trying to save their dress shoes and sneakers from the piles of snow that covered the sidewalks of New York. There was no traffic following one of the biggest snowstorms here in 18 years. The city was quiet. No taxis, few buses. People walking, laughing and sliding down the middle of streets as if auditioning for a Currier and Ives print.Neither was there a game against the New York Rangers last night.
