Portland G Byron Dafoe will back up Carey the next two nights before again changing places with Kolzig. The Caps already have put G Rick Tabaracci on loan to Chicago of the International Hockey League until Sunday.

LANDOVER -- Center Joe Juneau assisted on all of Washington's goals as the Capitals played to a 4-4 tie with the Philadelphia Flyers last night.Martin Gendron, Keith Jones, Dale Hunter and Calle Johansson scored for Washington, and goaltender Jim Carey made 30 saves.But this tie still was a bitter pill for Washington. The Caps had lost 4-3 in overtime to the Flyers in their first preseason game and last night Johansson's power-play goal 5:07 into the third period had given the Capitals a 4-2 lead.

Speed and driver error apparently caused two single-car accidents that left three people dead on rural roads between Friday afternoon and yesterday morning, state police said.In Somerset County about 3 p.m. Friday, two men were pronounced dead at the scene when their 1976 Ford struck a tree.The driver, Louis Elwood Jones, 40, and the passenger, Lamont Keith Jones, 24, died when their car crossed the center line on McCormick Swamp Road and left the roadway, police said.Whether the victims -- both residents of Princess Anne -- were related was not known, police said.

Rockets center Yao Ming will be limited to playing no more than 24 minutes in each game next season as he returns from a foot injury, the team's athletic trainer said Thursday. Keith Jones told the Houston Chronicle the time limit would be applied strictly and the 7-foot-6 Yao would skip a lot of practice sessions to limit the impact on his left foot. "Twenty-four is his number all year," Jones said. "Playoffs come, things could change. We're trying to get him through April.

Harford County police arrested an Edgewood man they believe may be responsible for armed robberies at 11 convenience stores in the past month. Keith Anthony Jones, 30, of the 1400 block of Harford Square Drive was charged with robbing a Joppatowne Royal Farms store and an Abingdon 7-Eleven early yesterday morning, said Robert B. Thomas, a spokesman with the Harford County Sheriff's Office. Thomas said Jones also matches the description of a suspect in nine other convenience store robberies in the past month.
