PALM DESERT, Calif. -- The real winner of the Reggie White Derby may be the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles will get the 13th pick in this year's draft and may get another first-round choice next year as special compensation for White, commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced yesterday.Tagliabue said next year's pick for White will be "higher than a third round choice" and possibly a first. He said discussions are still continuing on that pick. The Eagles get the picks only if they don't re-sign White and they've made it obvious they don't expect to retain him. If he's not signed by another team by the draft on April 25, they will have to renounce his rights to get this year's pick.

College Park -- New Town coach Mike Smith said his team took too many three-pointers in the first half, so he told his two guards, senior Daniel DeSouse and junior Stuart Clarke, to attack the basket more. DeSouse and Clarke did just that, leading the Titans on an 11-0 run early in the third quarter. That run, combined with a 13-0 spurt in the final quarter, helped New Town defeat Snow Hill, 62-55, in the Class 1A boys basketball semifinals yesterday at Comcast Center. The Titans face rival Dunbar, which has won four consecutive state titles, today at 1 p.m. "Somebody's going to make history," Smith said, referring to Dunbar's quest for five straight and New Town's seeking its first championship.

NFL players and owners both appear ready to let federal court judge David Doty decide the future of free agency in pro football. The judge, who presided over the Freeman McNeil case in Minnesota, has urged the two sides to settle their differences on their own for the last three years. He made the last plea in his chambers after a hearing last Thursday. But when the two sides met Tuesday in New York, they remained far apart and didn't come close to making a deal that would have taken the matter out of court.
