It's about an hour before showtime, and 16-year-old NicKayla Tucker, of Laurel, is obviously enjoying the last-minute preparations for her NicKayla & Friends concert Saturday at the Comfort Inn in Beltsville. Dressed in Nike pants and a muscle T-shirt, she joined her dancers in a number, stood back and watched, gave them a few instructions, and rejoined the action, smiling throughout and exuding an energy that's contagious. "Hey, can you play 'No Permission,' " she asked her sound crew in the back of the auditorium, a song she wrote and planed to perform for the show.

Nothing is more awkward than watching a gaggle of models try to pronouce medical jargon, and that's what made it all the more fun. This week, CBS (CW parent company) shamelessly plugged "CSI" (which I haven't watched since Grissom left), Express beat it into our brains that they sell fun, flirty and sophisticated clothes and Kayla was rushed to the hospital ... because she was stressed. In the end, one model went home and I threw a little parade in my head afterward. Join me, won't you?

Tanya Lawson's brightly painted orange fingernails glide along the keyboard, tap-tap-tapping under the fluorescent perma-glow of the NeighborCare pharmacy data processing center. Lawson, 43, handles one billing claim after another from a lonely cubicle by the wall. About the only other sound is the gurgle and hiss of the fax machine spitting out more prescriptions. It's Monday at 5:30 a.m., and Howard County is just waking up under a streaky graphite sky. Lawson, on the job four hours already, has barely begun her workday.

Nichole Battle, 38, has everything: a beautiful 3-year-old daughter, an architect husband who will do the dishes, an interesting job as a project manager for a nonprofit company and a coming trip to China to complete her executive MBA program at Loyola College. She also has a sweet tooth and 35 pounds she wants to lose by August, when she leaves for the Far East. "I can't go over there fat," she said. Battle is far from fat, but she doesn't always eat as healthfully as she could.
