Anne Arundel County health officials are searching for a man who was bitten by a dog Dec. 15 in Glen Burnie. County animal control hasn't been able to find the dog and verify its vaccination record. It's unlikely the dog has rabies, "but we can't say 100 percent that it doesn't," said Carole Kauffman, the manager of the Health Department's communicable diseases program. Rabies, which can be fatal, is spread through saliva. Health workers want to determine whether the dog's teeth punctured the man's skin.

This time, the stakes were different. For one of the few times in series history, last night's Towson-Dulaney Lacrosse Classic didn't decide the Baltimore County championship. At Towson State's chilly, blustery Minnegan Stadium, however, the 12th-ranked Lions still managed to find plenty of motivation en route to a 6-3 win before an estimated crowd of 1,000."We've still got the rivalry going, and we were still fired up for them," said Dulaney attackman Bill Kauffman. "We know it's always going to be a tough, tough game."

Maryland is a pretty spirited place for entrepreneurial activity. Last year, 320 adults per 100,000 residents started new businesses each month, according to a recent study by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a Kansas City, Mo., nonprofit group that encourages entrepreneurship. The Free State ranks 20th out of the 50 states in business creation with an entrepreneurial activity rate of 0.32 percent. It trailed top-tier states such as the District of Columbia, Louisiana, Wyoming, Georgia and California, which saw entrepreneurial activity rates ranging from 0.40 percent to 0.46 percent.

Howard County school administrators have banded together to pull away from the education association that traditionally represents them at the bargaining table, in hopes of joining a national group that will focus more on their specific needs. About 175 principals, assistant principals and central office-based instructional facilitators recently formed the Howard County Administrators Association, breaking away from the Howard County Education Association (HCEA), which has represented the system's teachers, secretaries, nurses and other support staff for years.

It was a surreal moment. Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman stood nervously on stage Sunday, surrounded by the glitter of Hollywood, as their documentary about India's most destitute children, Born Into Brothels, was proclaimed the winner of an Academy Award. Worlds away, the subject of that documentary - a group of children from the notorious red-light district in Calcutta - clamored around a television, watching their Auntie Zana and Uncle Kauffman grasp Hollywood's greatest honor. "They were screaming," said former Sun photographer Briski, 38. "They're just really happy.
