When he retired his final batter, Orioles emergency starter Rodrigo Lopez sprinted off the mound and into the Orioles' dugout. He shouldn't have been in such a hurry to give the ball to the Orioles' bullpen. In an unsightly seventh inning that prompted boos from those fans at Camden Yards who actually showed up to cheer for the home team, the Orioles coughed up a three-run lead to the New York Yankees when rookie reliever Jim Hoey melted down, and converted outfielder Fernando Tatis fell down.

Everybody hits In the home part of the Orioles' split-squad series, the first seven Orioles batters singled against New York Mets starter Aaron Sele en route to a six-run inning and a 9-0 win in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Orioles' road squad also won, beating the Florida Marlins and ace Dontrelle Willis, 7-3, in Jupiter behind two RBIs each from Jason Dubois and Oscar Salazar. The Orioles had 26 hits in the two games. More zeroes Erik Bedard continued his dominant spring, pitching five scoreless innings against the Mets, allowing three hits and two walks and striking out six. Bedard has an 0.64 ERA in four starts and said he feels ready to start the season right now. Asked if he is in the zone, Bedard said: "I guess you can say that.

News item: The Orioles are 6-1 (plus an incomplete suspended game) in the eight starts this season by Daniel Cabrera, who pitched a three-hit complete game Thursday night in Kansas City. My take: Can you believe that some idiot sports columnist wrote him off during spring training? Any fool can see the guy is bound for glory. News item: Top Ravens draft choice Joe Flacco says he's out to prove he's the team's best quarterback. My take: I hope he succeeds, but I'm sticking with my original prediction that Troy Smith will be the starter when the Ravens open the regular season against the Cincinnati Bengals.
