Before the season, choices look so clear. Predictions for MVP, Final Four and NCAA champion appear logical and sound. A few weeks into the season, the only question is this: What were people thinking? As the nonconference slates come to an end and we head into the meat of the season, let's reflect on who has proved us right, who has proved us wrong and who has confused the heck out of us. Told ya so: Duke was a unanimous — and deserving — preseason No. 1 in the Associated Press poll.

Twenty-five major college teams remain undefeated, not all are equal, and only one can win this season's national title. In fact, the title might not go to any of the 25. A one-loss team — say Iowa, which was brave enough to risk a nonconference game at Arizona — might have the backbone to fight back. Know this: Early-season records and statistics in college football are only slightly less fraudulent than pro wrestling. Pass completions against Georgia State — which plays at Alabama on Nov. 18 — count just as much as they do against Georgia Tech.

After Florida State lost at North Carolina State three months ago, Bobby Bowden still had some hope that his Seminoles could find a way to stay in the national-championship picture. But he knew that as long as other teams stayed unbeaten, the picture would get fuzzier every week.By the time Bowden sat down with his wife to watch the UCLA-Miami game on television Saturday, the Florida State coach figured that the Seminoles, then ranked fourth in the Bowl Championship Series, were still on the outside looking in.And then he watched the day unfold, as the second-ranked Bruins and third-ranked Kansas State lost their respective games.

NEW YORK - Kansas state Sen. Kay O'Connor, a self-described "old fashioned conservative lady," recently admitted that she "does not celebrate the enactment of the 19th Amendment in 1920" - a woman's right to vote. "We have a society that does tear families apart," said the Republican legislator, who originally entered the workplace to assist with her daughter's medical expenses. "I think the 19th Amendment, while it's not an evil in and of itself, is a symptom of something I don't approve of. The 19th Amendment is around because men weren't doing their jobs, and I think that's sad."
