As Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. hit the campaign trail with his new running mate Thursday, an image emerged of a modern suburban mom: a smart woman who has balanced raising children with an intellectually challenging career. Mary Kane is best known for her Cabinet position as Ehrlich's secretary of state and her marriage to a former Republican state chairman. But Ehrlich highlighted a different part of her resume, saying he would draw insights she gained during a yearlong stint as a prosecutor when he shapes anti-crime policy.

Former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. has selected his onetime Cabinet member Mary D. Kane as a running mate in his bid to reclaim the governor's office from the Democrat who toppled him four years ago. The Republican Ehrlich announced his lieutenant governor pick late Wednesday to his more than 27,000 Facebook fans, followed immediately by the more-traditional method of emails to others supporters and news media. Kane, 48, a Montgomery County resident who served as Maryland secretary of state for 18 months under Ehrlich, had been widely viewed as the top contender.

Lorie Kane was among those who were sad to see the McDonald's LPGA Championship move from DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Del., to Bulle Rock Golf Course in Havre de Grace three years ago. The 43-year-old Canadian, seven years removed from her last victory, got over some of that melancholy in yesterday's opening round of the 2008 LPGA Championship. Kane, who had missed the cut in five straight tournaments earlier this year and seven of the 11 events in which she played, made six birdies and no bogeys to share the lead at 6-under-par 66 with Emily Bastel.
