Most years, as fall slowly slips into winter, many of us feel the need to update our wardrobes with something appropriately "holiday." But with the economy about as bad as a re-gifted fruitcake, fashion followers will be happy to know that this holiday season, all that autumn-appropriate gear you bought two months ago - knitwear and tweed and faux-fur vests - still will work for most holiday parties. "You'll see knitwear in everything for the holiday season," said Toni James, owner of Katwalk, a fashion-forward boutique on Read Street.

At an impasse in their investigation, federal agents in Baltimore have announced a $2,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of those responsible for three multialarm warehouse fires that struck a company in the city last year. Special Agent Gregg Hine, an arson investigator with Baltimore field office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said the first fire at Life-Like Products' Northwest Baltimore warehouse on Retreat Street, in January 2005, is still ruled accidental by city officials.

It's been 14 years since Gail Kandel opened New York City Shoes in Owings Mills, and since then, she has logged untold miles on her own two feet plumbing show rooms in New York and Italy for unusual women's footwear. Shoes are the "ultimate accessory," says Kandel, whose travel uniform always includes a well-tailored pantsuit and comfortable, nicely detailed flats. How would you describe your style? My style is very classic because I'm tall and I like to wear understated clothes that I like to change with accessories.

A practicing attorney for more than three decades in Baltimore, Nelson R. Kandel is no stranger to the city's courtrooms. Yesterday, however, he found himself in the unfamiliar role of defendant, standing trial on charges of felony theft and insurance fraud. To the prosecutors who say he submitted phony injury claims for automobile accidents that never happened, Mr. Kandel is nothing more than a lawyer with no respect for the law.To his defense attorneys, the 62-year-old personal-injury lawyer was simply too good at his job to suit the insurance companies they say helped steer an undercover state police investigation into bogus accident claims.

A great place to see airplanes up close is at the Thomas A. Dixon Jr. Aircraft Observation Area off Dorsey Road, ringing Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The planes come right above the cars for takeoff or landing. Sunday, as the planes roared by every five minutes or so, a couple sat on the hood of their car eating pizza and pasta. "We want to try something new on Sundays, so we thought we'd come here," said Lance Kandel of Ellicott City. The Martz family of Odenton comes regularly: 2-year-old Drew loves to watch the planes and then play on the adjacent playground.

The sting: Undercover state troopers walk into a lawyer's office saying one of them has been in an accident but wasn't injured. If the lawyer encourages them to file a bogus insurance claim, the case is on its way to being made.Unless it turns out that the trooper had, in fact, been injured in an accident the day before. That's exactly what happened yesterday when the first case brought to trial in the state's much ballyhooed investigation of insurance fraud unraveled in a Baltimore courtroom.

In the 1999 movie October Sky, the sons of coal mine workers in West Virginia build rockets and improbably end up winning a national science contest. That movie inspired two brothers from Connecticut, sons of a nuclear engineer and a special education teacher, who took top honors as a team in this year's Siemens Westinghouse Math, Science and Technology competition. "We found that really inspirational - to see kids who come from an area that's virtually not on the map," said Mark Schneider, 18, whose project with his brother, Jeffrey, 16, focused on the West Nile virus.
