The pairing of Drew Forrester and Bert Moreno II, who met for the first time just before their Saturday morning tee time, proved to be a formidable weekend combination as they meshed for a record-breaking 68-70 - 138 and a one-stroke victory in the third annual Baltimore Cup that concluded at Hayfields Country Club yesterday. Bob Kaestner and Evan Hileman, champions the previous two years with 139 scores, hit that number again with three back-nine birdies to finish second. Tournament co-chairmen Henry Blue and Larry Storck, and Doug Ballenger and Steve Ford each posted 70-70 - 140 to tie for third.

HAGERSTOWN -- A routine two-putt par on the sixth hole of the afternoon round did not seem like much at the time yesterday, but it heralded the beginning of the finest comeback in the 72-year history of the Maryland State Golf Association Men's Amateur championship.Dave Rasley of Lakewood Country Club, 5-down to Bob Kaestner of Baltimore Country Club after 23 holes of the their scheduled 36-hole final at Fountain Head CC, proceeded to run the table.He won eight of the next 10 holes (two were halved)

The pairings of Joel Kaye-Rick Riddle and Bob Kaestner-Justin Klein each scored 3-0 wins to lead Baltimore past Washington, 10 1/2 to 7 1/2 , in their annual team match at Hillendale Country Club yesterday. The victory ended Washington's five-year winning streak.The Kaestner-Klein pair shot 5-under-par 67 to thwart Dave Rasley-Mike Watson, who combined for a 70, and Kaye-Riddle posted a 68 in turning back Matt Lucas and Henri deLozier.Marty West III-Vance Welch, the State Amateur finalists, teamed to get 6-under for 14 holes in beating Adrian Druzgala-Alan Zimmerman, 3-0.Washington received some late heroics, or the score might have been more convincing.

Mike Watson woke up at 3:30 yesterday morning and tossed and turned, thinking about the birdie he and partner Steve Madsen would have to make to capture the 39th annual Maryland Pro-Am Championship.On the drive through rush hour traffic from Rockville to the Baltimore Country Club, the twosome from Lakewood Country Club discussed the task that lay ahead, which consisted of trying to beat the host club pair of Brian Morrison and Bob Kaestner in a playoff."Steve said he had a tough time sleeping, too, thinking about that birdie we needed to make," said Watson, Lakewood's club champion and a salesman for Nationwide Insurance in Rockville.

The top seven teams posted the only under-par rounds and are within a stroke of each other after the opening round of the annual Baltimore Cup at Caves Valley Golf Club yesterday. The concluding round in the 18-team event will be played today at Hayfields Country Club. Rick Sovero-Andy Pataki and Len Callahan-Jason Raivel each shot 2-under-par 69 to squeeze in front of five teams at 70. Bert Moreno, half of last year's winning team, who is partnered this time with Mike Whitehead, matched par of 71, and two-time winners Bob Kaestner and Evan Hileman were a stroke back at 72. Final-pairing partners David Nocar and Bob Kaestner each recorded a late birdie, and the two winning holes clinched a 3-0 triumph over Matt Sughrue and Tim Meinhardt, giving Baltimore a 10 1/2 -7 1/2 victory over Washington in the annual Maryland State Golf Association team match at Eagle's Nest yesterday. Led by a 3-0 decision after a birdie binge from Vance Welch and Jeff Graff, Washington was on top 7 1/2 -6 1/2 with the last two pairings on the back nine. Baltimore, behind a barrage of birdies from Moose Brown and Keith Abbott and Nocar and Kaestner won both of those.

Baltimore Country Club and Columbia CC won area championships yesterday to set up today's rematch of last year's championship in the Maryland State team matches.Baltimore CC qualified with a 12-6 victory over the CC of Maryland, and Columbia, defending state titlist, advanced by beating Congressional CC, 12-6. The winning clubs got points from every pairing in earning 6 1/2 points at home, 5 1/2 away.The No. 3 teams for BCC dominated their foes, as Bob Kaestner-Bob Lee, playing at home, took three points from Joe Wintsch-John Bartholomew, and, at the CC of Maryland, Tim Dilli-Mike Reitz won 2 1/2 from a veteran pairing of Charlie Harris-Jackie Rites.
