Anne Arundel police responded Saturday night to a Holiday Inn Express hotel in Annapolis for a report of an armed robbery. At about 8 p.m., officers from the southern district arrived at the hotel, at 2451 Riva Road, and were told that a man in his late twenties or early thirties had entered the hotel, displayed a handgun and demanded money from the clerk, police said. The clerk gave the money to the man, who then fled, police said. Police said that county officers and an Annapolis City K-9 unit searched the area but were unable to find the suspect.

A Baltimore police dog was shot Sunday evening by a police officer during a foot pursuit of a motorist who drove through a speed checkpoint in South Baltimore, said a Police Department spokesman. About 6 p.m., police were manning the checkpoint in the 2600 block of Wegworth Lane near Hollins Ferry Road, near Wegworth Park, when a male motorist failed to stop when ordered and drove through the stop, said Anthony Guglielmi, chief spokesman for the Police Department. Guglielmi said the motorist got out of the car a few moments later and was fleeing on foot when officers at the checkpoint enlisted the aid of a K-9 unit to chase the man down.

The Bel Air Police Explorer Program is hosting a one-week Youth Police Camp this summer for children who are interested in the law enforcement profession. Campers will participate in classroom and hands-on activities with the many different officers from various units within the Bel Air Police Department, including a daily regimen of physical training. There will be demonstrations from the police K-9 unit and the Harford County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit and Motorcycle Unit. The campers will be required to wear a uniform consisting of a T-shirts with camp logo and a baseball cap. The cost to attend the camp is $40 per child.

A police dog shot by a city officer during a foot pursuit of a motorist who authorities say drove through a speed checkpoint was expected to make a full recovery after undergoing surgery Monday, according to staff at the Baltimore animal hospital where the German shepherd was being treated. The dog, named Blade, should be released this week from Falls Road Animal Hospital in Mount Washington, said Dr. Keisha Adkins, who performed the surgery. The dog faces four weeks to six weeks of restricted movement but should be able to comfortably walk after that, according to Adkins.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office is confident that when faced with the threat of an explosive device, it has the right man for the job. In this case, however, the right man is a dog: Elliot, a chocolate Labrador retriever. "A dog's nose is so far beyond a human's, it's hard to comprehend," said Deputy 1st Class John Seilback, a member of the sheriff's canine unit. "When you have pizza delivered, you smell pizza. A dog smells the dough, the sauce, the cheese, the delivery boy ... and scents wafting in from the street," Seilback said.

Man wielding knife robs convenience storeA man armed with a knife robbed a Keymar convenience store of an undisclosed amount of money about 5:15 a.m. Friday, state police reported.The store clerk, whom police did not identify, said a man walked into the High's store brandishing a knife and demanded the cash. The store is at the intersection of Routes 77 and 194 in a sparsely populated area of Carroll County.The robber took the money and fled, apparently on foot, the employee told police.The employee was working alone when the robbery occurred, police said.

Gas station robbed in Glen Burnie A Glen Burnie gas station was robbed at gunpoint, Anne Arundel County police said yesterday. The robber entered the Exxon Mobil station at 6701 Ritchie Highway around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, pointed a handgun at the clerk and demanded money. He fled with an undetermined amount of cash. Sykesville police get a new vehicle for K-9 unitA 1993 Ford Bronco will make driving more comfortable for the Sykesville Police Department's drug-detecting dog and safer for its five officers.The department took delivery on the $16,300 four-wheel drive vehicle last week.Hash, an 85-pound Labrador, and his handler, Officer Marvin Hewitt Jr., will have primary use of the vehicle. Chief Wallace P. Mitchell and the department's other three officers also will take turns in the driver's seat.Hash's comfort wasn't the only reason for adding the car to the department's fleet of two Fords and one Dodge.
