For more than four years, 'N Sync member Justin Timberlake has been king of bubble-gum pop and teen heartthrob extraordinaire. His group's album in 2000 broke records by selling more than 2 million copies in just one week. He inspired gushy fan Web sites galore and mesmerized the MTV generation with slick music videos. His catchy songs, such as "Drive Myself Crazy," with their sappy, uncomplicated lyrics, seemed to speak directly to the hormonally driven adolescent soul: Now I toss and turn, 'cause I'm without you How I'm missing you so bad Where was my head, where was my heart Now I cry alone in the dark.

It's not surprising then, that, amid all that, not a whole lot happened in the world of fashion in 2006. No major fashion figure emerged -- or died. No completely new thing caught fashion insiders by surprise. It was a year for eyelets and tunics, bubble skirts and leggings. Red lips made a comeback, and baring all (except when it came to a certain exhibitionist pop singer)

With no host and a bevy of performances, the 51st annual Grammy Awards telecast last night tried to position itself as a televised pop music festival, only with more glitter and very expensive, industrial-style staging. But unlike a pop fest (and previous Grammy shows), there was very little spontaneity - or a sense of fun. The performances were full and lush but still anti-climactic, for the most part. Despite all that, the program ran rather smoothly. But there was an obvious awkward spot early on. Rihanna, the Bahamian pop superstar, was scheduled to perform but bowed out at the last minute.
