Milestone Jose Cruz Jr. hit his 166th home run last week, one more than his father, Jose Cruz, hit from 1970 to 1988. The number 13: Sellouts at Dodger Stadium, the most since there were 27 in 1991. There were 11 last season.

The annual amateur draft is June 1, and the good thing about baseball's big day is that you don't have to read about underclassmen applying for the draft. Except for freshmen and sophomores at four-year colleges, just about everyone is eligible, including high school seniors. Those expected to go early:1. Angels, OF Darin Erstad, University of NebraskaHe's a left-handed power hitter batting .429 with 18 homers, 75 RBIs and 80 runs. He's got some negotiating leverage, too, because he's one of the top punters in college football.

Once upon a time, I thought I was a pretty savvy baseball fan. After all, didn't I devour the Sunday averages?That was one of the highlights of my week (Hey, wasn't it Thoreau -- OK, maybe it was Emerson -- who described people living lives of "quiet desperation"?
