COLLEGE PARK -- Questions loomed about Maryland's frontcourt when the Terrapins began last season. As the 2009-10 season opens tonight against Charleston Southern, some of the same questions are being asked, though for different reasons about different players. When the Terps take the floor at Comcast Center for the 8 p.m. game, Maryland coach Gary Williams will go with the three-guard lineup of Greivis Vasquez, Eric Hayes and Sean Mosley (St. Frances) that he used the second half of last season.

COLLEGE PARK -- A positive sign for the Maryland basketball team came in the number of shots Greivis Vasquez missed Friday night, as well as the number of passes the senior guard made that turned into easy baskets for the Terrapins. Those numbers added up to an 89-51 victory over Charleton Southern in the season opener at Comcast Center. Despite shooting 3-for-14 from the field and finishing with just nine points, Vasquez had 13 assists to set the tone for the Terps, who shared the ball (27 assists)

- With four regular-season games remaining, the Maryland Terrapins are closing in on a pair of milestones. With a win over Clemson here tonight, the Terrapins (19-7, 9-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) would push their home record in conference games to 7-0. Only a contest with Duke next Wednesday would stand between the Terps and a perfect ACC season at Comcast Center. Maryland - second in the conference behind the Blue Devils - is also in position to secure a first-round bye in next month's ACC tournament.

There is that marvelous recruiting base that runs the length of the Baltimore-Washington corridor. There is the stunning arena, the Comcast Center, where kids — young men — get to play in a pro setting. Now there is the tradition that Gary Williams carved out over 22 seasons, the undeniable vitality of a top tier Division I program resurrected to new heights by the coach who came back home to do it. What's not to like about Maryland basketball? "When I take the pulse around college basketball," ESPN analyst Dave Telep said, "I think this is one job that can be dangerous to a lot of people.

On a warm spring day when the only thing Maryland students would have had to complain about was a strong, gusting wind, the school and basketball program were dealt another shocking blow in as many days. This time, the winds of change carried away coach Gary Williams after 22 seasons at Maryland. A day after sophomore center Jordan Williams signed with an agent and officially left the men's basketball program without a viable low-post presence for the 2011 season, the coach resigned suddenly Thursday afternoon, casting an uncharacteristically quiet pall over the College Park campus on a beautiful spring evening.

COLLEGE PARK - Some college basketball coaches are born recruiters - charming, sociable and quick to embrace the sales pitches that are a necessary component of their jobs. Maryland's Gary Williams doesn't fit that mold. In his 20 seasons at the school, Williams has built his reputation less on recruiting and more on taking moderately talented players or hidden gems and polishing their skills. He has relied heavily on his assistant coaches to evaluate and recruit, according to a handful of people familiar with Maryland's program, including former assistants.

COLLEGE PARK - -After a series of intrasquad scrimmages, Maryland's basketball team finally plays tonight against somebody other than itself. The exhibition game against Indiana University of Pennsylvania at Comcast Center gives Terps fans their first opportunity to assess what is different about this season's team compared with last. Maryland, which finished 21-14 last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, recently was ranked 26th in the Associated Press preseason rankings.

A stunned Jordan Williams sat on the floor for a few moments after Korie Lucious nailed his buzzer-beating, kidney-punching three-pointer Sunday -- Williams' sizable rear end parked in the paint, like always. As the less-than-impressive Michigan State cheerleading crew stormed the Spokane Arena court and celebrated the Spartans' 85-83 win a few yards away, the future face of Maryland basketball gazed dead ahead. Only Williams knows what was on his mind. Perhaps the freshman big man was looking back on his first season in College Park.

New Maryland men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon is holding a teleconference Tuesday afternoon, but he chatted with Ed Norris and Steve Davis of 105.7 The Fan on Tuesday morning about what he has been up to since he was introduced as Gary Williams’ replacement two weeks ago -- and it has been a lot. Turgeon has filled out his coaching staff, including super recruiter Dalonte Hill , and has convinced Nick Faust, the top player in the...

Written off by many a couple of weeks ago, Maryland kept fighting, like always, and picked up a pair of critical wins over N.C. State and Florida State. The Terps kept slugging away Sunday night, but they had no answer for the Tar Heels' size and leng th . Nor th Carolina had 19 offensive rebounds, Tyler Zeller poured in many of his 25 points in the paint and John Henson blocked seven shots in the Tar Heels' 87-76 win. After falling behind by double digits in the first half, Maryland never stopped chasing North Carolina.
