ROCKVILLE - Jonathan Davis ended his high school playing career at Francis Scott Key with a soccer state championship in 1985. As a senior starter in 1989, he helped Elizabethtown (Pa.) College capture the Division III national championship. Davis had hoped to walk off the field in his sixth and final season as coach of Mount Hebron's girls soccer team the same way. He almost did. "I had done it twice, and it would have been nice to do it again in a different role as a coach," said Davis after his Vikings were beaten by Hereford in a penalty kick shootout in yesterday's Class 2A state semifinal at Rockville High.

Hammond coach Mike Mongelli became the county's third girls basketball coach this season to be ejected when he received a double technical in the fourth quarter of yesterday's home game against Centennial. Hammond athletic director Bob Maxey, who was in the gym when Mongelli was told to leave, said that Mongelli would have to sit out his team's next game. The Golden Bears are scheduled to play tomorrow at Wilde Lake. Basketball coaches Ciaran Lesikar of Glenelg and Marcus Lewis of Oakland Mills were each ejected in separate games this season, but neither sat out the next game.

ROCKVILLE - In the past six seasons, Howard County teams have eliminated Hereford's girls soccer teams four times in the playoffs. Two were in the state final, one in the state semifinals and one in the regional final. On a blustery day here yesterday, that all changed. "There's a first time for everything," said Hereford coach Steve Power, after his 15th-ranked Bulls battled No. 9 Mount Hebron for 100 scoreless minutes in a Class 2A state semifinal before prevailing in a shootout, 7-4. Q-Tip [Universal Motown] **** cds Within six years, Jonathan Davis, better known as celebrated rapper Q-Tip, bounced around five different labels. And although he recorded a wealth of material, none of it saw official release. Only one album, 2002's Kamaal the Abstract, came close to actually seeing the light of CD stores. But at the last minute, Arista, Q-Tip's label at the time, decided to shelve the project after promos had been sent out. It's a shame, because the album was a pointed and wickedly ambitious mash-up of soul-jazz, Beatles-inflected pop and New York-style hip-hop.
