The op-ed "Joint custody should be the rule, not the exception" (Oct. 8) trots out the tried and true myths about joint custody and about court adjudications. The statistics on families with joint custody include the 95 percent of all divorcing parents who settle out of court. Unless author Ned Holstein is proposing to mandate joint custody against the will of both parents, that statistic will remain. Of the remaining 5-10 percent of cases that go to court, 75 percent have a history of domestic violence.

I fully agree with commentator Ned Holstein's view that parenthood generally should be shared (" Joint custody should be the rule, not the exception," Oct. 8). As a father of two who fights for his children only because their mother wishes to control them, the courts all to often allow this to happen to great quality dads. Fathers are being cut out of our children's lives for the financial gain of others - mothers and their attorneys. A little-noticed research revolution confirms that our family courts are damaging the health of our children on a daily basis. In 2014, three separate and independent groups of experts reviewed decades of child development research. They found that after parents separate or divorce, children do much better with shared parenting - joint custody - on multiple measures of wellbeing than with single parenting. Yet in more than eight out of 10 custody cases today, one parent (usually the mother)

Commentator Ned Holstein makes excellent points about the values of shared parenting agreements ( "Joint custody should be the rule, not the exception," Oct. 8). As a policy analyst in very progressive California, Mr. Holstein and I have differing viewpoints on some issues; however, shared parenting has been proven time and again to be the most effective and beneficial custody arrangement. My particular focus regarding custody issues is on domestic violence - its prevalence, reduction and role in custody disputes.

Del. Jill P. Carter has taken it upon herself to hold up legislation to legalize gay marriage in Maryland, not because she opposes it but because she wants to draw more attention to two other causes: a divorce custody bill she is sponsoring and an effort to restore education funding. She is right to point out that the legislature is considering other issues than gay marriage, but she was wrong to walk out of a Judiciary Committee voting session Tuesday and demand that legislative leaders fast-track those other issues before she would cast a potentially decisive vote to send the marriage bill to the full House of Delegates for consideration.

Q: My ex-wife married a man who appeared on the scene only a month ago. She said she was married civilly and plans a church wedding in the future. My concern is for our kids, 9 and 12. We have joint custody -- alternating every two weeks. (I think she told me the part about the church wedding so that she could live with her friend until then, with the kids in tow.)I wish her well, but the children do not know this man. I myself have never met him. Should I be worried?A: Concern is more fitting here, since you are not a long-distance parent and will be with your children two weeks out of every month to check on their welfare and provide stability.
