Marine Cpl. Willie C. P. Kendrick III, son of Willie Kendrick of Laurel, recently returned from service in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Sea Angel, a relief effort aimed at helping Bangladesh recoverfrom a cyclone. The 1987 graduate of Laurel High School joined the Marine Corps in October 1987.Marine Cpl. John W. Zielinski, son ofJoanne and John Zielinski Jr. of Sykesville, also returned from deployment in the Middle East in support of Operation Desert Storm. Zielinski joined the Marine Corps in January 1987.

McGinnis assigned to aircraft carrier Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael J. McGinnis is in the middle of a deployment in support of the war on terrorism while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, based in Norfolk, Va. McGinnis' unit conducted more than 4,000 sorties and provided surveillance, reconnaissance and close air support to ground forces in Iraq. The Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group participated in maritime security operations and Operation Steel Curtain, which provided aerial support for U.S. Marine and Iraqi forces and prevented insurgents from entering Iraq through the Syrian border.

Grabill, whose husband, Jason, is the son of Charles and Mary Grabill of Union Bridge, was commended while serving with the 2nd Marine Aircraft wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, S.C.She was recognized for her outstanding performance ofduty, professionalism and overall dedication to the service. A 1983 graduate of Merced Union High School, Merced, Calif., Grabill joined the Marine Corps in May 1986.* Marine Pfc. William E. Wagner has been promoted to his present rank on graduation from recruit training Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.He received the early promotion for his superior performance during all phases of the 13-week training cycle, whichemphasized physical conditioning, self-discipline and teamwork.

Spring green tints the fields across from the 1895 farmhouse in northern Carroll County where Elaine May Stem grew up - a different hue from her view a year ago. Last year, she was donning a flak jacket while serving as a sergeant major in the Marine Corps Reserve in a landscape of browns and grays, from the sands of Kuwait into dusty Iraq. A year-old photograph shows her seated in a folding chair in front of a missile bunker. "Not much green there," she said of the contrast between Carroll County and Al Kut, a town southeast of Baghdad.

Dowell, son of Charles and Shirley Dowell of Bel Air, has completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.During the 13-week training cycle, Dowell was taught the basics of battlefield survival. He was introduced to the typical daily routine that he will experience during his enlistment and studied the personal and professional standards exhibited by Marines.A 1986 graduate of Bel Air High School, he joined the Marine Corps in September 1990.

Clark recently deployed with the Marine Corps' Second Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion to Fort Benning, Ga., for a three-month training exercise.The annual gunnery exercise involves light armored vehicles equipped with 25 mm machine guns. Marines will use the Fort Benning firing ranges to practice shooting at moving targets while maneuvering in the field.The Marines also will participate in small arms training and team operation.Captain Clark is the son of James P. and Joyce L. Clark of Berrett.

Adams of Westminster, recently graduated from the Naval Academy Preparatory School.During the yearlong course at the Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, R.I., students are prepared for entry into the U.S. Naval Academy or the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.Studies included English, mathematics, science and general pTC military subjects.
