The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse announced that assistant coach John Tucker (Johns Hopkins) will take over head coaching duties from Steve Duffy for the remaining eight games of the season. Tucker is a former Chesapeake Bayhawks and Baltimore Thunder head coach and has coached at Gilman, Loyola and Severn at the varsity level. At 1-5, the Cannons are off to their worst start since 2002; they have made at least the semifinals in all but two of the past 12 seasons.

With classes set to begin soon, a pair of local rising senior boys lacrosse players have made oral commitments to colleges. Archbishop Curley defenseman Johnnie Tornabene has committed to UMBC. Tornabene was a three-year varsity starter and All-Conference player at Curley for coach John Tucker . Also a starter for Maryland Lacrosse Club, Tornabene helped it reach the championship game at the June Session of Brine Shootout and to win King of the Hill. Tornabene also considered Dartmouth, Drexel and Salisbury.

We should all have it as bad as John Tucker, a high-school BMOC (or whatever they call them nowadays) who always gets the girl, always sinks the winning basket and is, by acclamation, the coolest guy on the planet. But as Spider-Man has learned, with great power comes great responsibility. John Tucker has great power, but of late, he's been misusing it. Why, the cad, he's been dating three girls at once. Lacrosse Vandy hires Severna Park grad Gardner as assistant Two-time All-American Julie Gardner (Severna Park) will join the Vanderbilt women's lacrosse program as an assistant coach, the team announced Tuesday. A 2012 graduate of Virginia, Gardner has spent the past year as an assistant coach at William & Mary, where her primary responsibilities included recruiting, social media, alumni relations, practice and game-day coaching. She will assume a similar role with the Commodores.

The son of a retired steel worker and a high school secretary John Tucker grew up in East Baltimore, graduating from Archbishop Curley in 1979. Whether coaching, teaching or washing his children's underwear, he applies a blue-collar approach to everything he does.On any given Thursday, Tucker might teach a morning history class at Gilman, attend graduate school at Towson University coach both Gilman and the National Lacrosse League's Baltimore Thunder in games or practice, and come home and do a load of laundry.

Archbishop Curley has named Chris Ogle as the new lacrosse coach, replacing former coach John Tucker. Ogle, a UMBC graduate who played four years for the Retrievers, has been with the program for the past 11 years as an assistant coach. Tucker, who led the Friars to a 12-2 mark and trip to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference semifinals this past season, stepped down to coach the Boston Cannons of the MLL.

The Baltimore Thunder of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League will play an exhibition on Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. at the Chicago Rosemont Horizon against the Detroit Turbos. This will be the Thunder's only preseason game.Another exhibition, set for tonight at the Hersheypark Arena, will find the Philadelphia Wings playing the Pittsburgh Bulls at 8. The Wings' top players include John Tucker (Johns Hopkins), Chris Flynn and John Conley (Towson State). Pittsburgh is led by forwards Joe Gold (UMBC), Brian Keith (Navy)

Severn School has hired one of the big names in local la- crosse in John Tucker to coach the Admirals' boys team. Athletic director Charles Duckett made the announcement yesterday that Tucker will succeed Jamie McNealey, who resigned after five seasons. "John brings a broad under- standing of the [Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association] lacrosse commuity, and has demonstrated success as an administrator, teacher and coach, " said Duckett. Tucker, who was inducted into U.S. Lacrosse's Greater Baltimore Chapter Hall of Fame this year, has an extensive back- ground in the sport.

Brian Abbott will take over Loyola's varsity football team - only the program's 10th coach in its 82 years - John Tucker, the school's director of athletics, announced yesterday. Abbott, an assistant athletic director and head varsity football coach at St. Paul's for the past eight years, replaces Joe Brune, who retired last month after 35 years of service at Loyola. "You need to come in, do your thing, work hard and prepare every day. You appreciate the opportunity to work in a program that Joe Brune coached, and you work hard to continue what he was doing," Abbott said.

Owen Blye grew up playing attack in Chester Springs, Pa., but he quickly became familiar with a certain defenseman named Tucker Durkin who grew up about 40 miles away in Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Blye committed to Maryland and Durkin made his way to Johns Hopkins and this Saturday at Byrd Stadium in College Park, the pair will meet again as opponents. “I actually played against him sometimes in our summer league,” Blye, a fifth-year senior, recalled Tuesday afternoon. “He's a great defenseman, and obviously they have a lot of confidence in him.
