WASHINGTON - Among long-range shooters, there are three desired states of being: Hot, unconscious and the state that San Antonio swingman Steve Smith is in. Smith, in his 11th season, is having the kind of season from three-point range that can only be dreamed of, and the reasons are pretty real. "I haven't been this open before. I get a lot of open looks. I've always in my career been one of the guys teams try to stop, so you're never going to get an open look," said Smith before last week's game against the Wizards.

Enough with the gripesUtah Jazz president Frank Layden is tired of Isiah Thomas' grumbling over his exclusion from the 1992 U.S. Olympic team.Layden isn't totally objective. The Jazz's John Stockton was selected to the team and, like Thomas, is a point guard. So, when Thomas whines about not making the team, Layden considers it a dig at Stockton."John Stockton will deliver the ball," he said. "That's what John Stockton does better than anyone and that's what the committee was looking for. I'm not sure they knew Isiah would do that."

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The U.S. Olympic men's basketball team keeps waiting on Larry Bird, but it now appears the Boston Celtics forward might miss the rest of the Tournament of the Americas.Bird, approaching his 36th birthday, did not play last night for the third straight game, and is considering returning to Boston to receive treatment on his chronic sore back."It's not that big a deal here. We're not even getting pushed," Bird said after the Dream Team's 128-87 victory over Argentina. "If I can't play in Barcelona, that's a big deal."

It would have appeared to be pretty much of a no-brainer for Rony Seikaly. A deal had been made to send him to the Utah Jazz, a team that last year extended the Chicago Bulls to six games in the NBA Finals. Playing alongside Karl Malone and John Stockton, Seikaly -- who was not going to the playoffs with the Orlando Magic -- was as close to a title as he would ever realize. But the deal fell apart Wednesday. The Jazz said that Seikaly and his agent failed to communicate with the team. Seikaly -- perhaps in an attempt at spin control -- said on Friday that Utah was scared off by the deal because of a stress fracture in his foot that could keep him out for four weeks.
