The game of musical anchormen (and women) that has been in play since NBC's Tom Brokaw retired in 2004, continued for a few more rounds yesterday at CBS, ABC and cable channel CNN. John Roberts, longtime White House correspondent and weekend anchor, is leaving CBS to join CNN as a senior national correspondent. Roberts, a 14-year veteran of CBS who had been considered heir apparent to Dan Rather as anchor of CBS Evening News, will start his new job at CNN Feb. 20. Rather was forced to resign in March.

Honestly, unless you are a big government liberal, how many people think the federal government should have more power than it already exercises over its citizens? Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, 94, thinks the Constitution needs at least six amendments in order to bring the country more in line with what he believes is good for us. He outlines them in his new book, "Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change the Constitution. " It is a revealing look into liberal thinking and the ideological opposite of radio talk show host Mark Levin's book, "The Liberty Amendments: Restoring theAmerican Republic.

We all should give a big, hearty thanks to Chief Justice John Roberts and his crew of conservatives for putting a big "C" back in government corruption. By turning complete control of our government over to our own lovable and eminently trustable oligarchs, Mr. Roberts has virtually annexed the Constitution for the wealthy. He's sort of like Vladimir Putin, sans the charm and good looks. William Smith, Baltimore - To respond to this letter, send an email to talkback@baltimoresun.com . WASHINGTON - When Mike Luttig stood up as a groomsman in John Roberts' wedding nine years ago, more than a few people could have predicted that they would someday be sharing the spotlight again. They'd been young leaders in the Reagan and Bush administrations, and both had made deep impressions as being smart and well-disciplined. Each was the first in his family to become a lawyer, and both had clerked on the Supreme Court. On that July day in 1996, Luttig was on his way to becoming one of the nation's most prominent federal appeals court judges.

Word had barely come down that the Supreme Court majority was upholding the Affordable Care Act when incensed conservatives began printing up "Impeach Jon Roberts" t-shirts and a hacker had altered the chief justice's title on his Wikipedia page to "Chief Traitor of the United States. " On a freshly minted "Impeach John Roberts" Facebook page, one tea party "patriot" wrote: "Welcome to fascism. Thanks to this horrible decision from the 4 liberal justices and John Roberts there is zero limit to what the government can force us to do. " Outside of the perpetually alarmed right-wing loony bin, however, Mr. Roberts was receiving praise for acting as the fair umpire he promised to be when he was first confirmed by the Senate.

It is hard not to notice that the ascension of women to the highest ranks of power brings out the most bizarre commentary on their character and qualifications, as if pants suits and piano playing had anything to do with anything. In the case of Elena Kagan, nominated by President Barack Obama to the Supreme Court, we are hearing about her "careerism." Her straight-to-the-top resume is apparently evidence of cold-blooded ambition, while the same quick march to success was considered evidence of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.'s brilliance.
