AS THE END OF 1999 rushes upon us, I take little comfort in accepting that I have done everything that a non-computer geek can do to prepare for Y2K. All program updates have been downloaded in the home computer, leaving just one thing to do to ensure a smooth transition to the year 2000:I've dusted off the old manual typewriter. THE CONGREGATIONS of four Linthicum churches will observe Good Friday this week with a ceremonial procession of the cross from church to church.Members of church youth groups will carry a cross from one church to the next, where there will be a short time for prayers and hymns.After Stations of the Cross at noon at St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church, 6405 S. Orchard Road, congregants will process to Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, 200 School Lane, then St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 118 Marydell Road, and finally to St. John Lutheran Church, 300 W. Maple Road.

OUT FOR a walk this week, I came upon a row of hedges that looked like twigs, until I got closer. Blades of chartreuse stood inches high amid the dormant branches. The narcissus are sending up shoots, and the buds on the tiny crocus' look like they'll be bursting open soon. Hard to believe it's February.The Ferndale Garden Club is preparing for spring with a "Divide and Conquer" program at a 7 p.m. meeting Tuesday at the Ferndale-Linthicum Senior Center, 7205 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd.No, this is not a program on hostility.

IN CELEBRATION of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Rev. Casimir Peterson of the Reparation Society of the Immaculate Heart of Mary will bring the Lady of Fatima Statue to St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Parish for a crowning ceremony at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church in Linthicum HeightsThe evening begins with the recitation of the rosary, followed by a solemn procession with the crown. The Knights of Columbus will provide an honor guard.Members of the St. Philip Neri Sodality, Catholic Daughters, Bible study groups and the Men's Club will participate.

ST. PHILIP NERI School recently conducted its first graduation for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program for fifth-grade pupils who completed a two-month course conducted by Cpl. Robert K. Moore Jr. of the Anne Arundel County Police Department.School principal Teresa L. Baker, Monsignor Francis X. Zorbach, pastor, and parents and teachers attended the program. Pupils read essays, performed skits, recited ways to say no to drugs and received certificates for the course.The pupils summarized their DARE experiences in an essay and made a commitment to stay drug-free and violence-free.

Leonard Williman: In Sunday's editions of The Sun, an incorrect time was given for a memorial service for Leonard Williman, a retired department store buyer and musician who died Wednesday of bone cancer at his Linthicum home. Services for Mr. Williman, who was 87, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturdayat St. John Lutheran Church in Linthicum. The Sun regrets the error.Pub Date: 12/29/98

EVERYONE IS invited to participate in an ecumenical service and meal at the World Day of Prayer at 11 a.m. Friday. Peace Lutheran Church, 416 Wellham Ave., Ferndale, will be the host church.This year's theme is "Like a Seed Which Grows into a Tree." Child care will not be provided.After the prayer service, there will be a potluck luncheon in the church hall. Each person is asked to provide a covered dish to serve four.Donations of nonperishable food will be collected for the North County Emergency Outreach Network's food bank.

The 13-site Linthicum Historic House Tour runs from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $15 and include a map. Vehicles should be parked at St. John Lutheran Church on West Maple Road. Tour participants can walk from there or use the shuttle bus and can take the tour in any order. All guests are invited to end the tour at the GFWC of Linthicum Heights' clubhouse at 110 N.
