CORRECTING A CORRECTION: Did you ever have one of those days? In an editorial Nov. 29, we congratulated Westminster on its award for maintaining a 12-year streak without a pedestrian fatality. Afterward, it was brought to our attention that John Fisher was killed Nov. 4 while crossing Route 140. We published a correction Dec. 2, saying the streak had ended. Now we learn from the city police, that Mr. Fisher was struck 75 feet outside the city line. We are sorry for Mr. Fisher's tragic death, while we hope Westminster can sustain a remarkable streak that's still going.

Well once again it is time for the citizens of Maryland to elect a governor. I wonder who the choices are. I remember in last election there were other parties that ran for this position. The Green Party and Ed Boyd, the Populist Party and Christopher A. Driscoll. However I do not remember hearing a lot about them or seeing much media coverage on them or on their platforms. I do kind of remember there was some debate sponsored by the media. However only certain candidates were invited to attend.

SODA STRAWS, it seems, can be used for more than drinking a soda. But can several of them, properly assembled and glued together, support 7 1/2 pounds? Some eighth graders at Arundel Middle School are finding out.Two teams of Arundel Middle students have been formed to construct bridges entirely of straws, hot melt glue, and reinforcements cut from plastic soda bottles as part of the Maryland Engineering Challenge, sponsored by the Baltimore Museum of Industry. The completed bridges must span 20 inches and must support a toy truck filled with lead that weighs 7 1/2 pounds.

Supporters of a skateboard park in Harper's Choice village say the Columbia Association should build one even if it doesn't make a profit. They say the CA builds basketball and tennis courts that don't make a profit and that at least half of Columbia's 13,000 children ages 12 to 18 are skateboarders.Last night, the advocates got support from Chick Rhodehamel, who oversees Columbia's open space. "Tot lots are something we provide for children to use and there's no fee," he told the Columbia Council.

Trainer Tim Ritchey took a horse where it had never gone before, and the horse responded by taking his boss to a familiar place. This odd twist was accomplished by 5-year-old Up With The Flag, a fairly new acquisition to the Ritchey barn who had never been beyond a sprint in his 11-race career. That limit ended yesterday when "Flag" prevailed by a grudging nose in the 1 1/8-mile, $60,000 St. Brendan Stakes at Laurel Park. He defeated Perfect To A Tee in a grueling stretch drive, showing he has the stamina and courage to go beyond the limits of many a sprinter.
