It's amazing that Sen. John Edwardshad the audacity to divert campaign funds for personal use. It's also unfathomable that he basically turned his back of his supportive wife, who was suffering from terminal cancer. Even more mind-boggling is that Senator Edwards took some of that campaign money to cover up his relationship with his mistress, who bore his illegitimate child. He somehow thought he could wriggle through this morass of missteps and become President of the United States.

The more I read about John Edwards' shenanigans during the 2008 presidential campaign, the more I'm convinced he is a mirror-gazing, fork-tongued, tramp-chasing weasel. But the more I read about the federal case against him, the more sure I am that he does not deserve to go to jail. The trial to determine if Mr. Edwards broke campaign finance laws has begun, and it promises to be as lurid and titillating as Ken Starr's vivid account of President Bill Clinton's fling with Monica Lewinsky.

A storm of recriminations and denials followed the publication of "The Politician," but the testimony inJohn Edwards' criminal trial reads like the book's key chapters. The former senator from North Carolina is accused of accepting more than $900,000 in illegal campaign contributions while seeking the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Prosecutors say he used the money to bankroll his mistress, Rielle Hunter, rather than his campaign. The defense says the money was a personal gift, unrelated to the campaign.

I have been thinking about media and public shame a lot lately. And events this week with Rupert Murdoch globally and Sheila Dixon locally have focused my troubled thoughts. The litany of public figures who have been in the news lately for behaving shamefully is a long and sad one. The indictment of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards in June brought back the whole sorry saga of him fathering a child out of wedlock with a campaign videographer as his wife fought a cancer that would claim her life in 2010.
