It's tricky making predictions about what's going to happen at the winter meetings. It's tricky because teams are continually meeting with teams and agents and you really don't know what's going on behind closed doors. Even if we think we do. So I'm out on a limb here. I understand that. But from what was gleaned on the first day - after talking to Orioles officials and anyone else who would speak to me - the sense is that the club is not on the big-time free agents.

Burres implodes Brian Burres had been a picture of consistency for the Orioles, but in his last start of the first half, he came up small. Burres turned in the shortest outing of the season by an Orioles starter, going just 1 1/3 innings. He allowed seven runs on six hits, pushing his ERA from 3.38 to 4.27. Jermaine Dye capped off Chicago's five-run first inning with a three-run home run to left-center. Tadahito Iguchi then ended Burres' evening with a two-run shot to right-center. Iguchi comes up a single short Even with a six-run lead in the bottom of the eighth inning last night, most of the announced crowd of 30,364 at U.S. Cellular Field stayed.

CHICAGO - Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen hopes his players get oxygen before they open their American League Division Series today against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. But there's one thing he wants to keep: momentum. "Right now," Guillen said. "We're hot." The White Sox, having squandered an AL Central lead the past two weeks, staved off elimination for the third straight day, winning a 1-0 one-game tiebreaker with the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night to clinch the division.

The Cardinals opened the winter looking to upgrade at least two of the three infield spots alongside Albert Pujols but haven't done anything more significant that importing Ryan Theriot to replace shortstop Brendan Ryan. Cardinals pitchers will miss Ryan's fielding, just as they may wonder how general manager John Mozeliak could have signed Lance Berkman to play the outfield. … The Twins made a good move re-signing Jim Thome, as Justin Morneau remains an unknown in his comeback from postconcussion syndrome.

The Rays are excited about catcher Robinson Chirinos, acquired from the Cubs in the Matt Garza trade. He could push Kelly Shoppach, an October scapegoat for Rays fans, in a platoon with John Jaso, a left-handed hitter who emerged as the potential regular last season. … Daniel Bard is pushing the Red Sox to take a look at him as a starting pitcher after the acquisition of Bobby Jenks seemingly eliminated his role as heir apparent to Jonathan Papelbon . … Felix Pie appears to be a loser in the Orioles' signing of Vladimir Guerrero . Luke Scott , who was primarily a designated hitter in 2010, likely will be a regular in left field, which was split between Pie and Nolan Reimold . … Orioles general manager Andy MacPhail maintained his 25-year streak of not going to arbitration when he reached agreement with Jeremy Guthrie on the eve of a scheduled hearing.

Just came back from our session with Dan Duquette, and there is no real news to report except that he confirmed what I had written earlier. The Orioles have had trade talks with several teams including multiple talks with the Chicago White Sox. Duquette wouldn't get into specifics, but the Orioles have interest in Chicago's starting pitching duo of Gavin Floyd and John Danks as well as outfielder Carlos Quentin. When asked about Quentin, whom the White Sox could move to make room for Dayan Viciedo, Duquette said: "That's an interesting name; I really can't comment on specific players on other teams' rosters.

While right-hander Jason Hammel's struggles over the past two months have been magnified given the success of the other starting pitchers in the Orioles rotation, the team's offense has faltered in his recent starts, and the result has been his lengthy winless stretch. In his first 11 starts in which he started 7-2, Hammel received 7.09 runs per game from the offense, and the Orioles scored at least five runs in 10 of those 11 outings. But that production has dried up in Hammel's past 10 starts.

Recaps of the Orioles' 5-1 win and 6-5 loss against the White Sox yesterday: BURRES BRILLIANT Brian Burres' days as a forgotten man in the Orioles' rotation might be coming to an end. A day after getting one out before heading to the clubhouse when the rains came, Burres returned to the mound to start Game 1 of the doubleheader and dominated the White Sox over eight innings, facing just two batters over the minimum. He improved to 3-1 with a 2.49 ERA and has pitched 13 2/3 straight scoreless innings.
