John Carroll's Scott Strappelli wrapped up an outstanding high school wrestling career by helping Maryland's Private School All-Stars beat the 1A-2A and 3A-4A All-Stars. The event, in its 28th year, pits the top senior wrestlers from both public school divisions against one another and their private school counterparts, in a tri-meet hosted by McDaniel College. The 1A-2A squad featured 10 Maryland State Champions; the 3A-4A had eight champs and the private schools had four.

No. 2 St. Frances, the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion, was one of three teams to have two players selected as All-MIAA this season. Panthers seniors Maurice White and Tevon Saddler made the team. No. 3 Mount St. Joseph (senior Kameron Williams and junior Phil Booth) and No. 7 Archbishop Spalding (senior Earl Potts and junior Jourdan Grant) were the other teams to have two players honored. Calvert Hall sophomore Drew Edwards, Glenelg Country senior Warren Powers, No. 9 John Carroll senior Rodney Elliott and McDonogh senior B.J. Andrews were also selected.

Caitlin Hennegan, a 2010 graduate of the John Carroll School, has had quite a year. Over the summer, Hennegan was awarded a student grant from the University of Maryland to study at Nankai University as part of the university's study abroad program. The focus of the trip was to study Chinese languages and culture. After completing her studies, Hennegan spent an additional three weeks at Tsinghua University's Immersion Camp as volunteer teaching English to Chinese adults. On weekends, she had the opportunity to take in the sites such as the Great Wall, Mount Tai and Tiananmen Square.

John Carroll junior forward Lionel Owona has started a project to collect used basketball shoes that will be sent to Cameroon to benefit underprivileged young basketball players. Owona is asking anybody who has used basketball shoes that can still be worn to please donate them to help grow the sport in the African country. C.J. Keyser, a 6-foot-3 sophomore small forward who transferred from John Carroll to Patterson Mill last week, has not yet been ruled eligible to play basketball for the Huskies. Patterson Mill athletic director Jason Bellamy said there was no update on whether Keyser would be declared eligible for the upcoming Class 2A East region playoffs. The Huskies are set to travel to Edgewood in tonight's opening round and Bellamy said Keyser was not a member of the team.

The Mount St. Joseph boys basketball team took care of two things in Sunday's Baltimore Catholic League semifinal against John Carroll at Loyola University's Reitz Arena. With junior guard Phil Booth leading the way with 16 points, the No. 3 Gaels came away with a 62-53 win over the No. 7 Patriots that gave coach Pat Clatchey his 500th career win and sends them into the final to defend last year's championship. Mount St. Joseph (29-6) will meet No. 7 Archbishop Spalding in Monday's championship game.

Heading into today's semifinal round, local wrestlers are still in contention for titles at the National Prep championships in 12 of the 14 weight classes. With six wrestlers advancing to the semifinals, No. 1 McDonogh is in fourth place with 86 points after the first day of the tournament at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. No. 3 John Carroll is tied for fifth place with 65 points, while No. 6 Archbishop Spalding is seventh with 59.5 points. The leader after the first day is Blair Academy (N.J.)

C.J. Keyser, a 6-foot-3 sophomore small forward for the John Carroll boys basketball team, has transferred to Patterson Mill, but his playing status for the upcoming Class 2A state playoffs is still unclear. Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association executive director Ned Sparks said Keyser's eligibility would be determined on whether he qualifies under Harford County Public Schools rules. Harford County supervisor of athletics Ken Zorbach could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday.
