Veteran midfielder Kyle Dixon (Archbishop Spalding) had seven points and tied a Major League Lacrosse record with three 2-point goals as the Chesapeake Bayhawks opened the 2013 season by beating the Rochester Rattlers, 17-14, in front of an announced 3,940 at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla. More than 100 people, including 63 students, attended an informational session at Battelle that included demonstrations about the growing field of cyber security. The interactive sessions April 18 included mobile forensics on android, cryptography, robotics and cyber-hygiene, which focused on strategies for staying safe and employable while using social media. The purpose of the event was to expose students to the possibilities of career opportunities in cyber security and it included a session on cyber degree programs and related careers.

A move to the midfield paid big dividends for Mount St. Mary's senior Andrew Scalley (Archbishop Spalding), who was named the Northeast Conference men's lacrosse Player of the Week for the fifth time this season. Scalley factored in on six of the Mount's 10 goals in a 10-9 win over first-place Bryant on Saturday. The senior, who typically plays attack, recorded two goals and four assists to push his league-leading point total to 63. Scalley scored a pair of goals in the second quarter and dished out assists on both Mount tallies in the fourth quarter.

Despite their winning record, the Bryn Mawr girls have struggled much of this season to put together a full 50 minutes of solid lacrosse. That changed Tuesday at Maryvale. The No. 6 Mawrtians won most of the draws, worked a patient settled offense and play stifling defense to take a 10-5 victory over the No. 4 Lions in a critical Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference game. "We definitely wanted this win - and a little revenge too for last year," Mawrtians senior Kate Snouffer said, referencing her team's loss to Maryvale in the A Conference semifinals last season.

Jordan Cargile worked both sides of the ball as No. 1 Eastern Tech shut out Owings Mills, 16-0, in softball Thursday. Cargile pitched a one-hitter, striking out seven, for the host Mavericks (11-0) and went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs. The Eagles fell to 1-6. No. 5 Mount de Sales 10, John Carroll 0: Ashley Lesniewski (12-2) got her eighth shutout of the season for the host Sailors (12-2, 11-0 Intercollegiate Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference). John Carroll juniors Kate Rizzieri, Emily Patrick and Rita Watson, members of Girl Scout Troop 1382, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, presented to them at a reception at Martin's East on April 14. Their efforts were acknowledged, in the form of Congressional, Senatorial, Gubernatorial and Presidential Citations. To receive this honor, a girl must use her organizational, leadership, project management and teamwork skills to serve her community.

No. 13 Chesapeake-AA completed its comeback boys lacrosse victory two minutes into overtime as Austin Brown took a bounce shot to beat No. 14 Severn, 7-6, Thursday. The host Cougars (6-1) and Admirals (9-3) had played to a 3-3 halftime tie before Chesapeake-AA went up 5-4 heading into the fourth quarter. Severn scored twice to take the lead before Chesapeake-AA's lone goal of the quarter forced overtime. Brendan Duerr had two goals and two assists for Chesapeake-AA. Ryan Lamon and Hunter Gray each scored twice for the Admirals, who face top-ranked host Boys' Latin today at 4p.m.

John Carroll point guard Rodney Elliott has spent the past four years starring against local competition. For the next four years, the Baltimore Sun first-team All-Metro selection will stay close to home and attempt to do the same in the America East. "It's a great feeling. I'm glad I got it off my chest," said Elliott, who committed to UMBC on Tuesday. "I felt pressure the last two days that it was coming up on the [spring] signing period. I just wanted to get it off my chest. " Elliott, a co-captain and four-year varsity player, led the No. 7 Patriots with 16.6 points per game, also averaging 4.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.3 steals in his senior season.
