Last-minute heorics is nothing new when No. 3 Archbishop Spalding and No. 4 John Carroll get together in girls soccer. That was again the case Friday afternoon in Bel Air, where the host Patriots got a goal from sophomore Susie Snee with under two minutes remaining in regulation play, salvaging a 1-1 overtime tie against the defending Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion Cavaliers. Spalding got the game's first goal with 16 minutes to play when senior Maggie Morrison finished off a chance in front after Samantha Kirk's shot went off the top crossbar.

The late-blooming and stellar volleyball career of John Carroll grad Andrew Cranford began with a watchful eye and a positive push. A three-sport athlete who grew up taking turns among soccer, basketball and lacrosse, Cranford was unexpectedly cut from the soccer team in 2002, his sophomore year. It opened the door for volleyball, a sport he had never played until he stepped onto the court in his junior year. Cranford, a 6-foot-5 middle hitter, went on to enjoy a stellar four-year career at Stevens Institute of Technology before getting a taste of professional volleyball in Germany, from which he recently returned after a month with a team in Rottenburg.

The John Carroll wrestling team missed out on a good chance to win the MIAA Tournament at Mt. St Joe Saturday. "We were up by 14 after day one and feeling really strong going into Saturday," Patriots coach Keith Watson said. "Then, just like the lights going out at the Super Bowl, we lost our momentum when George missed weight. We caught a little fire as Saturday went on, but it wasn't enough. " A mix-up in driving forced the Patriots's George Weber to arrive 15-20 minutes late, according to Watson.
