It was among the first questions on the lips of baseball observers entering this season. Would Leo Mazzone's switch from the Atlanta Braves to the Orioles leave one pitching dynasty in shambles and herald the coming of another? Today, as Mazzone makes his first return trip to Atlanta as Orioles pitching coach, the question remains unanswered. Orioles pitchers got off to a terrible start. And even after pitching better of late, they rank first in the majors in walks and second to last in ERA. Meanwhile, the Braves are experiencing their worst pitching season and worst season overall since 1990.

John Burkett, San Francisco Giants: "I've heard so much about it that my expectations were high, and it's great it lived up to my expectations. I saw it on TV, but it's so much better in person. It's a new park that's designed to be old, but look new. What else could you want?

It's the defense, John Burkett says. No, now he says it's the offense. And not only that, it's also Rod Beck. He keeps talking, and now it's the overall team attitude. Before you can ask another question, try to pin him down, he's telling you a pitcher on this Giants team would have to work to fail.Don't believe it. Or, if you really want to, believe some of it.Burkett is not 16-4 just because he has been caught in a swirl of outside forces. He hasn't been swept up in a strong undertow, left to flail helplessly in a sea of easy wins.

If ever there was a game meant just for Orioles pitcher Pat Hentgen, this was it. His team suffers a crushing, 10-inning loss Thursday night in Minnesota and flies back to Baltimore, with most players getting home from an eight-game road trip at about 5 a.m. His opponent arrives in Baltimore from Texas, squinting through the same red eyes at roughly the same hour, and out from the plane steps the Boston Red Sox and the most potent offense in baseball....
