Major League Baseball should go on hiatus during the World Cup. Honestly, is anyone paying attention to a Monday night game in St. Petersburg? I was appalled that the bar I was at last night had the Orioles on even though no one was watching. How dumb. Anyway, here's the Coffee Companion, where we recap the previous day's sports headlines. - Clint Dempsey's early goal and John Brooks' late winner gave the United States a tense, 2-1 win over Ghana to keep our nation's World Cup hopes alive . It was wonderful, and I am glad to say I have restored my normal heart rate.

Services will be held Thursday, August 4 at 10 A.M. from Kurtz Funeral Home, P.A., 1114 Baldwin Mill Rd., Jarrettsville, MD. Interment in Bel Air Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. For those who desire donations may be made to the National Tuberous Sclerosis Association.

John H. Brooks Sr., who had been a partner and senior vice president of a Baltimore insurance brokerage founded by his grandfather, died of respiratory failure Thursday at St. Joseph Medical Center. The former Guilford resident was 82. Mr. Brooks was born in Baltimore and raised on Melrose Avenue. He was a 1941 graduate of Boys' Latin School and enrolled at Washington and Lee University. His studies were interrupted by enlistment in 1943 in the Navy, and he served as a storekeeper aboard vessels in the South Atlantic.

Peterson of Philadelphia, PA., Laura Gibbs Rostow of Macungie, PA., Mary Brooks Mullahy of Tanzania, Africa and Chestnut Hill, PA., a son George Gibbs Peterson Jr....

On Friday, November 12, 2004 JOHN BROOKE GUNNING, JR., age 75, died at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin. Born in Baltimore City, he was the son of the late John Brooke Gunning, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Fick Gunning. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Margaret Elizabeth Gunning of Ocean Pines; three sons, Patrick Michael Gunning and his wife Carol of Ocean Pines, William Ryan, III of Rosewood, MD and David Ryan and his wife Linda of Abingdon, MD; three grandchildren, John Brooke Gunning, III, James Ryan and Michael Ryan; a brother, Edward Gunning of Yardley, PA and several nieces and nephews.

On May 13, 2006 JOHN STRICKLENGALLON, decorated Veteran of WWII, predeceased by his beloved wife Martha Gallon (nee Simpson), his daughter Cynthia Anne Criswell (nee Gallon); sisters and a brother; he is survived by his grandchildren John Brooks and Lindsey Anne Criswell. A memorial service will be held at the family owned Leonard J. Ruck Inc., Funeral Home, 5305 Harford Rd (at Echodale) Tuesday 11 A.M. Inurnment to follow at Parkwood Cemetery.
