From its bird's-nest tower to its livable living room, from its swimming pool to its dock extending into the West River, Ellen and Jim Rogers' prize-winning renovated cottage does more than welcome and embrace its family - it entertains them. When they first bought the house in 1986, both worked in Washington, and it was simply a weekend getaway. Jim Rogers is a sailor - he took his 1981 Swan 47 across the Atlantic last summer - and the cottage was a good place to keep his boat. But when they decided in 1998 to move to the house full time, they knew it would mean a major renovation.

I spilled my coffee and laughed out loud when I read this sentence in David Selig's Preakness commentary ( "Coffee Companion (5/19): Chrome's nose, throwback uniforms and more ," May 19). He wrote: "The casinos that have opened under the administration of Gov. Martin O'Malley and Lt. Gov. Brown have aided the horse racing industry by boosting the size of purses. " Some of us remember the five years between 2002 and 2007 when Mr. O'Malley and the dim bulbs in Annapolis fought allowing any casinos to operate in Maryland and said that using gambling money to help the state was "morally bankrupt" because casinos would bring "undesirable people, prostitution and crime.

Marc Raim's letter in which he describes himself as a liberal Democrat and laments the dropped health insurance coverage caused by Obamacare asks, "How could such a thing have happened?" ( "Dropped coverage is serious matter," Nov. 13). Really? It happened because you liberal Democrats voted for the current occupant of the White House and his unqualified advisers who have no business or executive experience. This administration wants government involved in every aspect of our lives.

As a Vietnam-era U.S. Marine, I understand why there are only eight female names on the Vietnam Memorial wall out of 58,267. What perplexes me is why women would want to face the horrible conditions of forward combat units in the horror of war ("Pentagon to open most combat roles to women," June 19)? Most combatants our troops face these days are young, Sharia-minded Muslim men from a culture which devalues women; they will react with a horrible vengeance to any woman we put in a battle situation against them.

In reference to the May 24 article about the Forest Diner ("Final order at the Forest Diner"), we would like to provide the following corrections. Firstly, the diner was purchased in 1957 by not only Carl Childress, but also Jim Rogers, who were brother-in-law and equal partners. Carl, Jim and his wife Mary, as well as Betty (Carl's wife, Jim's sister) worked together to grow the business until 1970, when Jim Rogers decided to pursue other business interests, at which time his share of the diner was purchased by Carl and Betty.

I can't believe I'm reading The Sun lately in this liberal, one-party state. Last week, I saw articles chastising the Obama administration for abuses of power, government overreach and the five latest investigations in which "all the president's men" knew nothing about anything while under oath before Congress. And now, can it be that Dan Rodricks - of all people - is berating the governor and the "dim bulbs in Annapolis" for passing the 37th tax or "fee" under the O' Malley administration ("Give us a break from City Hall's fee fever," June 13)

I have a question for all the people who once fought so hard against casinos in the state when Gov.Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.ran on a "slots" agenda: Don't you feel silly? Now these people can't seem to get enough of the millions of dollars being generated by gambling venues, or of the jobs that are being created in their neighborhoods. Just a few years ago, Gov. Martin O'Malleyand the dim bulbs in Annapolis said that using gambling money to fund education was "morally bankrupt. " Where is their "moral superiority" now?

Garrison Keillor: In your commentary of Jan. 20 ("Despite all the screaming, common sense will prevail"), you were right -- common sense did prevail in Massachusetts on Tuesday night. It's funny how history does repeat itself. While you ignore and ridicule the Tea Partiers as hollering and waving their arms and having "paranoid hallucinations of the right," their message has again been heard as the "shot heard 'round the world." The only folks that havent heard the message are you, the current occupant of the White House, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

I get angry when I hear the liberal Democrats and the current administration blaming the tea party for everything from the shutdown of the federal government to the reason why Obamacare isn't working. These pseudo-intellectuals and pseudo-elites think they can speak against the will of the American people and bypass the Constitution with impunity. Liberal news outlets describe tea party members as a group of ignorant, gun-toting, Confederate flag-waving idiots. The Wall Street Journal last week had an article about tea party members that found them to be small business owners, professional people, highly-skilled, successful, middle class individuals who are more educated, more politically-involved and earn more money than average Americans.

I agreed with almost everything that Thomas F. Schaller said in his recent column on race relations ("A welcome call for soul-searching about race," July 24). I think he was correct in writing that President Barack Obama "cannot be easily dismissed with the usual racial tropes. That is, so long as he keeps his mouth shut about race matters, which for most of his presidency he has. " President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, in their positions, have sworn to defend the U.S. Constitution and uphold the laws of this country, including our system of jurisprudence.

China: Officials she upset would not even meet with her the last three years. North Korea: Our attempts to talk with them never commenced and they are now threatening to shoot long-range nuclear missiles at us. Egypt: An ally forever is now run by the Muslim Brotherhood to whom we are now selling sophisticated weaponry.

Regarding North Korea, our attempts to talk with them never got off the ground and they are now threatening to launch long-range nuclear missiles at us. In his recent commentary, Robert Embry uses Baltimore City public health initiatives to make the point that there are some things only government could accomplish ("Government does good; here's proof," Oct. 24). I disagree. Except for the lead paint poisoning example, these do not serve the greater majority of us as taxpayers in this state. Baltimore's historically high infection rates for AIDS, syphilis, and the parental decision to not have their children vaccinated for mumps and measles all point to immoral or risky behaviors and parental choice not to follow the common sense health guidelines that the majority of us follow.

In Gerald Stansbury's commentary ("Unrepresentative committee blocks Md. death penalty repeal vote," Jan. 2), he implies that four of members of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee members who voted "no" on allowing the death penalty to go to a floor vote did so because they are white and from Baltimore County and do not represent those most affected - people of color. Mr. Stansbury states that "this racial bias has no place in public policy," as he sees it from his position as president of the NAACP Maryland State Conference.

Jim Rogers ("Government workers deserve no sympathy," Dec. 11) denies sympathy to federal employees who complain about attacks on their pay and benefits. Truth is, federal employees have it good, like private-sector employees in those European "socialist" countries that our politicians denigrate. But over there, at least for northern industrial countries like Germany and France, private and public employee compensation is about the same (European Central Bank, Working Paper 1406) - public employees are ahead in southern Europe.
