The first time Peyton Manning hunkered into an NFL huddle, called an NFL play, scanned the field and fired a pass to an NFL receiver, didn't come as the No. 1 overall pick of the Indianapolis Colts. It came with the New Orleans Saints. And the future four-time NFL Most Valuable Player was in high school, more than a decade before he would lead the Colts to this year's Super Bowl against the Saints. He grew up in New Orleans, and his father, Archie Manning, was a former star quarterback for the Saints who later was always around the team because he was their radio color analyst.

Joe Greene joined the Miami Dolphins as defensive line coach yesterday, less than a week after leaving the same position with the Pittsburgh Steelers.Greene became the second former All-Pro hired by the Dolphins in three days. Atlanta Falcons coach Jim Mora had a conference call yesterday, speaking with local reporters at the Ravens' Owings Mills complex. Asked about comments his quarterback, Michael Vick, made after Sunday's game, Mora replied: "I didn't see those comments, so I really can't comment on those comments." I want this guy speaking at my daughter's school. Ravens linebacker Adalius Thomas was asked if he brought his track shoes to chase Vick. "Yeah, track shoes and a couple rockets." I assume he doesn't mean Yao Ming and Juwan Howard.

Dan Henning, who thought he would get another chance with San Diego, was fired yesterday, one day after he completed his third straight losing season with the Chargers and seventh overall as an NFL head coach.Henning's entire staff also was dismissed, although general manager Bobby Beathard said he would encourage Henning's replacement to interview the assistant coaches. Henning's staff included defensive secondary coach Jim Mora, son of New Orleans Saints head coach Jim Mora, and receivers coach Charlie Joiner, who is San Diego's all-time leading pass catcher.
