ST. LOUIS - Instead of going for the throat against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, Houston Astros manager Phil Garner saved Roger Clemens for a potential seventh game. Garner knew he had one of the best big-game pitchers in history at his disposal and assumed Clemens would be stronger on four days' rest. But St. Louis made that one of the most painful decisions of Garner's career, winning Game 6 Wednesday night on Jim Edmonds' walk-off home run and coming from behind to beat Clemens last night and earn a berth in the World Series.

At least the Orioles face a team during Cal Ripken's expected record-breaking series that is struggling worse than they are. The Angels' 8-1 loss to Boston yesterday extended their losing streak to nine in a row, their longest of the season. They have lost 12 of their past 13 games and five straight series. California began by losing three straight to the Orioles out in Anaheim and is 0-6 on its current road trip. The Angels' last win came against the Orioles on Aug. 24. The Angels have not even had a lead in 70 innings.
