Adrienne Dulaj, a social worker from White Marsh, spends most of her days working in areas that she considers dangerous. Also an avid runner, Dulaj has to schedule her workouts to avoid those same neighborhoods at night. "I don't want to be in some of these areas in the day sometimes," she said. "I just don't do it if it's not the right time of day. I like to know someone is around. " With the Baltimore Running Festival and other popular fall footraces fast approaching, local runners have had to take care deciding where and when they run. Some have struggled in recent weeks as daylight has grown scarce on either side of normal business hours.

Tim Allen knows almost every brick, cobblestone and crack in the sidewalk of Baltimore's Inner Harbor. He's been running there at least three days a week for the past four years -- even in the cold months. After moving from Washington to Baltimore four years ago, Allen, who works on the corporate side of food service, tired of running alone and started the Fells Point Runners Club. It is one of a dozen or so Baltimore-area running clubs that meets weekly through the heat, rain and snow to log miles together.

My son and I traveled to Anchorage, Alaska, to do some sightseeing and halibut fishing last May. We drove south along the Seward Highway, from Anchorage to Seward, a distance of about 125 miles, stopping frequently at pullovers to take in the views. It is almost impossible to drive this highway more than 5 miles at a time without stopping at a pullover to take in the views. Each stop was more beautiful than the last. This photo was taken at Bear Lake, which is just north of Seward. The mountain's reflection in the lake was a photo waiting to happen.
