A bicyclist died after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Elkridge on Thursday, police said. David Allen Overmiller, 58, of Jessup was riding south on U.S. 1 near Troy Hills Drive about 9:40 p.m., when he was struck by a vehicle traveling in the same direction, police said. Overmiller was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he died yesterday morning. Police had no description of the hit-and-run vehicle yesterday. They are asking anyone with information to contact 410-313-3700.

Anne Arundel County Police are investigating a crash in Jessup that killed a 50-year-old resident. The accident occurred at 3 a.m. Wednesday, when a Ford pick-up truck traveling south on Montevideo Road struck Robert Ashworth Brown, who died at the scene, police said. Brown, of the 2000 block of Citrus Avenue, was walking along the road near Montevideo Court, police said. Investigators initially called the accident a hit and run. But Keith Edward Harrell, 23, who police identified as the truck's driver, returned to the scene shortly after officers arrived.

Jessup Elementary School parents deserve credit. Not onl have they organized Anne Arundel County's first volunteer school renovation, they've conquered the mountain of school bureaucracy that stood in their way.For a while, it seemed the school board was determined to squelch the group's volunteer spirit. Parents wanted to donate $500,000 in time, materials and money to renovate the school, but instead of enthusiasm, they were met with worried frowns, questions about liability and other red tape.

Howard County police are investigating the armed robbery of a Jessup fast-food restaurant early Wednesday evening while customers stood in line to order their meals.About 6:50 p.m., a man entered the Roy Rogers in the 8700 block of Washington Blvd., approached the manager and displayed a handgun, police said.The man demanded money and was given an undisclosed amount of cash from the register. Police said other employees and customers were still in the restaurant at the time. No one was injured.

A man's body was discovered inside a vacant Jessup home Saturday, along with a young boy — who was unharmed — Howard County police said. Police identified the man as Najib Malik Abdullah, 26, of Jessup. Detectives believe they are a father and son who were last seen Tuesday leaving a relative's home in Jessup following a domestic incident. Police were called just after 3 p.m. to a home in the 8700 block of Mary Lane, where a family member of the resident returned to the check on the house and found the man's body and the 5-year-old inside.

As of 9 a.m. Wednesday, traffic was slow on Route 175 at Sellner Road in Jessup, due to an accident. An accident was slowing traffic on 33rd Street and Loch Raven Boulevard in Baltimore City. The Baltimore City Department of Transportation is warning motorists that Park Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Centre and Monument streets Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a crane lift operation. Detours will be in effect, and parking will also be restricted in this area during this time.

Two freight trains collided shortly after 2 a.m. Friday while attempting to maneuver the rail line inside a CSX yard in Jessup, Howard County fire officials said. Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services responded to the 8400 block of Dorsey Run Road for reports of a train derailment at approximately 2:10 a.m., officials said. The conductors were the only two people on board at the time of the accident, and there were no injuries reported, according to officials.

For the second time in just over a week, a Friendly's restaurant in Anne Arundel County was robbed, police said. Police said that early Monday, a man with a handgun held up an employee who was about to enter the Friendly's restaurant in the 2600 block of Annapolis Road in Jessup. The man, who pulled the hood of his jacket over his head leaving only his eyes and nose showing, forced the worker to take him into the restaurant and give him money, police said. He then ran away. Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said in an email that detectives will check for similarities between this robbery and others, including the one that took place Oct. 2 at another Friendly's.

An alligator was seized from an alleged Jessup gang member's home after Anne Arundel County police executed a search warrant in a drug investigation. The three-foot American Alligator, along with $3,000 worth of marijuana, cash and other items were taken from a home in the 7500 block of Gleneagle Drive on Friday. Alligators are not permitted in a residence and animal control was called to the home. Police said the alligator was healthy and was taken to a facility for exotic animals.
