A two-alarm fire burned through an auto shop and affected traffic along Route 1 in Jessup on Sunday evening, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services. Firefighters from Howard and neighboring Anne Arundel County were dispatched to the blaze in the 8100 block of Jenmar Road just before 5 p.m., said Jackie Cutler, a fire spokeswoman. When they arrived, the intensity of the fire forced them to work to contain the flames from outside the building only, she said.

Several inmates have left hospitals and returned to the Brockbridge Correctional Facility in Jessup after a Friday night stabbing incident, according to state prison officials. Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services officials reported that several inmates were stabbed during simultaneous fights at the minimum-security facility before 10 p.m. Friday. Seven of the inmates were taken to three different hospitals, while four were treated at the prison, said Mark Vernarelli, a department spokesman.

A bicyclist died after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Elkridge on Thursday, police said. David Allen Overmiller, 58, of Jessup was riding south on U.S. 1 near Troy Hills Drive about 9:40 p.m., when he was struck by a vehicle traveling in the same direction, police said. Overmiller was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he died yesterday morning. Police had no description of the hit-and-run vehicle yesterday. They are asking anyone with information to contact 410-313-3700.

A man's body was discovered inside a vacant Jessup home Saturday, along with a young boy — who was unharmed — Howard County police said. Police identified the man as Najib Malik Abdullah, 26, of Jessup. Detectives believe they are a father and son who were last seen Tuesday leaving a relative's home in Jessup following a domestic incident. Police were called just after 3 p.m. to a home in the 8700 block of Mary Lane, where a family member of the resident returned to the check on the house and found the man's body and the 5-year-old inside.

As of 9 a.m. Wednesday, traffic was slow on Route 175 at Sellner Road in Jessup, due to an accident. An accident was slowing traffic on 33rd Street and Loch Raven Boulevard in Baltimore City. The Baltimore City Department of Transportation is warning motorists that Park Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Centre and Monument streets Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a crane lift operation. Detours will be in effect, and parking will also be restricted in this area during this time.

Two freight trains collided shortly after 2 a.m. Friday while attempting to maneuver the rail line inside a CSX yard in Jessup, Howard County fire officials said. Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services responded to the 8400 block of Dorsey Run Road for reports of a train derailment at approximately 2:10 a.m., officials said. The conductors were the only two people on board at the time of the accident, and there were no injuries reported, according to officials.
