NEW YORK -- Jerrod Mustaf, who left the troubled Maryland basketball program after his sophomore year, was considered too soft and thin to hold his own among the National Basketball Association's rugged big men.But after a month of hand-to-hand combat in training camp against strong forward Charles Oakley, the 6-foot-10, 238-pound forward has proved to himself and to New York Knicks management that he has NBA strength and mental toughness.Oakley tested the No. 1 draft pick with every veteran's trick in the book, but Mustaf kept fighting back.

Walt Williams played four years at Maryland and is now a rising star with the Sacramento Kings. Jerrod Mustaf left Maryland after his sophomore year and is now a perfect nobody with the Phoenix Suns.Don't ascribe any deep meaning to this tale of two classmates. Mustaf isn't envious of Williams' splashy debut, or his lottery-pick money. Sitting in the Phoenix locker room before a recent game, he seemed entirely pleased with the direction of his life, if not his career.Lying in his gym bag was a book entitled, "The Business of Music."

SALISBURY -- After attending six schools in seven years, Dameon Ross found happiness at Salisbury State, which hopes he'll settle in for a long stay on the Eastern Shore. The Sea Gulls continue their quest for an NCAA Division III championship tonight at 8, when they play host to Salem (Mass.) State in sectional play. Salisbury State has the leading candidate for national Player of the Year honors in senior forward Andre Foreman, but it probably wouldn't be one of the 16 teams left if Ross hadn't come its way in August.

Willis Reed, a proud warrior in his days as the backbone of two New York Knicks championship teams, is not too proud to admit he made a mistake in trying to block the addition of Bernard King to the New Jersey Nets roster. As the team's general manager, Reed advised against acquiring the former Bullets forward who had missed all of last season with a knee injury and departed Washington after an acrimonious dispute with management. But Nets coach Chuck Daly, seeking reserve firepower, pushed Reed to sign King for the waiver price.

Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams and two of his players, junior guard Walt Williams and sophomore forward Evers Burns, recently spent an evening at the B&O Train Museum entertaining some children and local dignitaries. That's appropriate, because this season Gary Williams has become the conductor of a team that roughly approximates The Little Engine That Could. He keeps pushing and urging his players to chug up the hill and so far, he thinks they can, he thinks they can."I think they've worked hard.
