The story seemed to be unfolding exactly as it had the previous two days. Again, the Orioles had played well against the Chicago White Sox and again, a White Sox slugger - Jermaine Dye this time - had put them behind with a mammoth home run. But yesterday, the Orioles came up with a twist. Mariners@Orioles Tonight, 7:05, Comcast SportsNet, 1090 AM Starters: Mariners' Gil Meche (9-5, 4.19) vs. Orioles' Adam Loewen (1-2, 6.50)

Branch Rickey knew what he was talking about when he said he would rather trade a player a year too soon than a year too late. He wasn't speaking about franchise icons specifically, but that wisdom carries over to the mess the Mariners find themselves in with Ken Griffey Jr. It's no huge surprise Griffey's pride and addiction to the lifestyle allowed him to overstay his ability. The steady decline of his batting average (.277 in 2007, .245 in '08, .214 in '09) exposed his diminishing skills.

The Orioles are talking to Joe Crede (above) - a curious development given they already have two right-handed-hitting third basemen in Ty Wigginton and Garrett Atkins and a solid DH option in Luke Scott . They're trying to move their surplus for relief pitching. … The Rangers' signing of Colby Lewis was fascinating. Lewis pitched great for two years in Japan after failing to establish himself as a Rangers prospect and now returns with a two-year guarantee to start.

Houston-- --You do see what's happening, don't you? They're trying to change everything, trying to shake the very foundation on which you've built your sporting world all these years. The White Sox take a 2-0 World Series lead into tonight's Game 3 against the Astros. As is typical when you're on the brink of something either very great or very disastrous, the entire city of Chicago is all of a sudden very spiritual. They're talking about fate and divine intervention. They're talking about forgiving gods and a team destined to break a curse.

ATLANTA -- Braves fans began leaving Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium in the sixth inning last night, certain of victory, and why not? Atlanta led 6-0, and victory in Game 4 and the World Series seemed assured. But the Yankees stormed back, tied the game in the eighth when catcher Jim Leyritz hit a three-run homer off Braves closer Mark Wohlers and won in the 10th, when Wade Boggs drew a bases-loaded walk. With the 8-6 victory, New York tied the series at two games apiece, and guaranteed the fact that the best-of-seven series will end at Yankee Stadium.

Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire didn't hesitate recently when asked his definition of a league Most Valuable Player. "Justin Morneau," he said. The Twins' 25-year-old first baseman isn't just making a name for himself in his fourth big league season and true breakout year. He also is emerging as perhaps the top MVP candidate, since there are flaws surrounding his chief competition: Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz (doesn't play the field, no playoffs); New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter (lack of power, star-studded lineup)
