Social shopping is the new trend in Internet commerce these days. Websites have sprouted up, promising great discounts if a certain number of people sign up to buy. Groupon and LivingSocial are some of the most prominent, but a small Maryland startup is also trying to make a name for itself. Jasmere was started by Katrina Kugel, 40, and Jeremy Kugel, 38, a husband-and-wife team with marketing experience in corporate America. Their Silver Spring neighbor, Andy O'Mara, also is a partner.

Arnold Mears credits the Boy Scouts of America with rescuing him from an abusive home life and giving him the skills and confidence to become an effective communicator. He put those skills to use last week when he was part of a sit-down meeting with President Barack Obama. "I had no knowledge of the great things the program has to offer," said Mears, 19, a graduate of Perry Hall High School who plans to attend Coppin State University in the fall. Mears was one of the hundreds of Boy Scouts who gathered at the Inner Harbor's Rash Field Saturday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the organization.

Every other Thanksgiving, Michael Schwartzberg and his family make the trek from Pikesville to North Hills, N.Y., to share a turkey dinner with his parents at their home on Long Island. This is their year to visit, so the busiest travel day of the year found the family on the road - headed into to the heart of the nation's most populous metropolitan area. With Schwartzberg's wife, Stacey Needle, behind the wheel and their sons, 6 and 9, in back, the family joined an estimated 794,000 other Marylanders who took to the roads in spite of all the compelling reasons to stay home.

Growing up in Baltimore in the late 1980s, Dan Griffiths and Jeremy Kasten knew each other just enough to be wary. When, as freshmen at Boston's Emerson College, fate cast them as roommates, neither was exactly thrilled. "I called the school right away," says Griffiths, "to say, 'Hey, I kind of know this guy. Is there a way I can not live in this guy's room?' " The two men roar with laughter. If the housing people at Emerson had only listened. But they didn't, and now, some two decades later, these two Baltimore guys are sitting together on a couch in a largely deserted West Baltimore school building.

N ews item: Ravens coach John Harbaugh is one of five current and past NFL head coaches who are headed to the Persian Gulf to take part in the inaugural NFL/USO Coaches Tour. My take: Just shows how quickly Harbaugh has risen in stature since making the jump from Philadelphia Eagles special teams coach to the head coach who led his team to the AFC championship game in his first season. Bonus take: Harbaugh told reporters the other day that he has a lot more to learn about teamwork and commitment from the servicemen and servicewomen over there than they could ever learn from him. That's what you're supposed to say, but you could tell he meant every word of it. News item: Manny Ramirez isn't feeling too guilty about his violation of baseball's steroid policy, telling reporters this week , "I didn't kill nobody ... I didn't rape nobody."

LOPEZ LAUNCHES A PAIR Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie has been very vulnerable to the home run ball this season, coming into Wednesday's game having given up 14 in his first 67 1/3 innings of work. Obviously, Mariners second baseman Jose Lopez got the memo, as he hammered a pair of homers to account for much of the Seattle attack. ROBERTS BUSTING OUT? Brian Roberts came back from the recent West Coast trip in a 2-for-26 slump, but seems to be breaking out of it at home. He doubled to lead off the series opener and break a string of 39 at-bats without an extra-base hit and doubled again to open Wednesday night's game.
