Cleveland -- The Orioles were already having a bad week when they arrived at Jacobs Field yesterday for their last series of the first half of the season. They had been outscored by 18 runs in three straight losses to the Chicago White Sox. And a rotation that had thrived for a time looked lost again. Kris Benson seemed as good a bet as anyone to ease his team's pain. He had been the Orioles' most consistent starter for most of the season. Orioles@Indians Tonight, 7:05, Ch. 13, 1090 AM Starters: Orioles' Erik Bedard (9-6, 4.44)

A recap of the Orioles' 13-8 loss to the Indians last night: Rally spoiled With the Orioles down 7-3 going into the seventh inning, the team displayed its resiliency yet again. The Orioles scored five runs in the seventh to take the lead. However, it didn't last long as reliever Rocky Cherry gave up one run in the seventh and two in the eighth. Sarfate crushed Given one more chance to keep his spot in the rotation, Dennis Sarfate authored another poor performance. In four-plus innings, he allowed seven runs (six earned)

The Orioles had long begun preparations for their game last night when the club's top executives summoned reporters into a small room adjacent to the home clubhouse at Camden Yards and delivered a somber announcement. Adam Loewen would miss much of the season with a stress fracture in his left elbow, a revelation that cast a reeling team into even more despair. As Loewen's roommate and best friend, Nick Markakis took the news harder than most. And it was he who stepped to the plate in the 10th inning last night when the Orioles desperately needed something to feel good about.

CLEVELAND -- This time, it took only four pitches for the Orioles' suddenly vulnerable bullpen to turn a lead into a sizable deficit and for an important slump-breaking win to turn into another gut-wrenching loss. Brought in to preserve a one-run sixth-inning lead that starter Steve Trachsel had worked so hard to preserve, Jeremy Guthrie gave it up in no time, allowing a go-ahead, two-run single to Josh Barfield and a three-run, inside-the-park homer to Grady Sizemore that cost the Orioles the game.

Giving it up Steve Trachsel had repeatedly gotten out of trouble through five innings, but neither he nor the suddenly struggling bullpen was able to repeat that feat in the sixth inning. Trachsel issued back-to-back two-out walks and Jeremy Guthrie turned a 1-0 lead into a four-run deficit in just four pitches. Guthrie, a one-time top prospect who was released by the Indians this offseason, hit pinch hitter David Dellucci, allowed a two-run single to Josh Barfield and then a three-run, inside-the-park homer to Grady Sizemore.
