"Someday, my prince will come. " -- Snow White, 1937 In a hotel in Canada hangs this picture, someone's mischievous take on Snow White a few years after happily ever after. She is posed in an anonymous suburban den. Behind her, Prince Charming slouches in a chair, slowly going to seed. Snow has a babe in arms and a few other rug rats scattered about the floor. She faces you with an expression that seems to ask, is this all there is? It is less a comment on marriage than on the notion that marriage is the holy grail of a woman's existence, the finish line of her life's hopes, dreams and goals.

The Break-Up is half of a great movie: a biting, hard-hearted look at what happens when former lovers take off the gloves and begin using each other as emotional punching bags. It gets the sense of betrayal right, the absolute fury that the pig you've been sleeping next to all this time not only doesn't understand his or her piggishness, but seems to revel in it. But The Break-Up doesn't offer insight into how the mutual attraction between Vince Vaughn's Gary, a narcissistic, good-time-loving schlub, and Jennifer Aniston's Brooke, a cultured, meticulous, Type-A poster girl, arose in the first place.

LOS ANGELES-- --As most people with access to even rudimentary technology - smoke signals, telegraph - have already heard, Jennifer Aniston separated from husband Brad Pitt back in January 2005 and promptly turned around and signed on for a not-so-romantic comedy titled The Break-Up. "Well, yeah, it's pretty ironic," Aniston says now, when the subject is broached. "You know, at the time it was something I thought about. You know, you kind of can't believe when I first got the call that a movie called The Break-Up is coming.

Derailed lands an audience in the puritanical pits. It punishes impure thoughts so ruthlessly that it might have been made by Dana Carvey's Church Lady. It flails the actors as mercilessly as it does the audience. Was the Swedish director, Mikael Hafstrom, taking revenge on the American star system? A token Chicago streetwalker played by Georgina Chapman looks far more lush and vibrant than Jennifer Aniston as an adulteress. Naughtiness can put a twinkle in an actor's eyes, but here it just tenses Aniston up and dulls her out. Maybe she was feeling in a punitive mood.

Maybe the producers got confused, because filming for the movie Marley and Me has begun in Hollywood, but not the Hollywood where you usually see big stars and film crews. Part of the movie is being shot at the beach in Hollywood, Fla., but that hasn't spared stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston the constant presence of the paparazzi. One aggressive cameraman has been arrested on a charge of trampling plants in the Crandon Park nature preserve in nearby Key Biscayne. Not exactly a Kodak moment.

There's a self-loathing at the center of Friends with Money that makes it a tad unpalatable, as well as a sameness, a dependence on cliche, that makes it seem trite. All the fine acting, all the carefully observed friendships at its center can't overcome the feeling that something of a dead horse is being beaten here. Jennifer Aniston, who seems to enjoy playing the outsider with self-confidence issues (see 2002's The Good Girl), is the one with the friends - OK, let's get all the puns about her erstwhile TV series out of the way now - and as the title suggests, she doesn't have much money.
