Jazz Ensemble's spring concert The Carroll County Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Glenn W. Patterson, will present its second annual spring concert, "Sentimental Journey 2006," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Winters Mill High School auditorium, 560 Gorsuch Road. Featured musicians include Herb Sell, piano; Brad Collins, vocals and tenor saxophone; Gil Rathel, trumpet; David Motter, trombone; Jeff Boone, alto and soprano saxophone; Charles Berry, trumpet; Erik True, drums; Jeff Hiner, bass; and Debbie Blanchard and Glenn Patterson, vocals.

Jazz Night, Western Maryland College's end-of-semester evening of live jazz performed by student musicians and vocalists, will be at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Decker College Center Forum.The evening will feature the WMC Jazz Ensemble, the Jazz Workshop, the Percussion Ensemble, a string section, guests and several vocalists. It is free, and refreshments will be provided. This semester's concert will feature big-band, reggae, rhythm and blues and Latin music. Performers will be led by Jazz Night organizer Steven "Bo" Eckard, a music lecturer at WMC.Tenor saxophonist Brian Beninghove, a junior at Westminster High School, and violinist Maggie Donahue, a senior at North Carroll High, will perform with the 24-member WMC Jazz Ensemble.

If you attended this year's Spring Music Concert at Glenelg High, you enjoyed a wonderful evening. Performances by the concert band and the jazz ensemble, under the direction of Barry Enzman, and by the choirs, Madrigals, and men's and women's quartets, under the direction of Nancy Buckle, were flawless and professional.The groups presented difficult, exciting and even humorous music. The audience was joyful and satisfied as they left the school after an exhilarating evening. People were asking if the bands could get any better.

College symphony, jazz ensemble to perform tonight First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3604 Chatham Road, Ellicott City, will present the Davidson College Symphony Orchestra, directed by Tara Villa, and the Davidson College Jazz Ensemble, directed by William Lawing, at 7:30 p.m. today. On the program are selections from works by Schubert, Grieg, Dvorak, Mussorgsky and others. The Jazz Ensemble will present "Channel One Suite," as performed by Buddy Rich, and other pieces. Admission is free.

NED ROGERS, a Dorsey relative, is in the midst of restoring the Dorsey home, the Brick House on U.S. 40.Rogers has completed the mountain of paperwork to have the home placed on the National Register of Historic Places and is restoring the home for his residence.Previously owned by the now-deceased Lassotovitch family, the house was distinguished by its large grape arbor."My motivation is to show people that historical restoration can be done and that it can be profitable," Rogers said of his plan to retain several acres, using the profits from the sale of additional land for the expense of rebuilding the property.

It will provide space for Christian education, meeting rooms and bathrooms.The trustees of Union Chapel and the congregation of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, which worships there, will celebrate groundbreaking May 23, after the 9:30 a.m. service.

Joseph F. Shields, president of Carroll Community College, looks at a grassy knoll on the southern edge of the small campus and envisions hundreds of people sitting in lawn chairs, listening to the rhythmic beat of a jazz ensemble.It's not exactly Woodstock in Westminster that he sees, but rather an outdoor theater where students and artists can showcase their talents.That vision will become reality today when high school musicians take center stage at the Rotary Amphitheater, the first outdoor concert venue in Carroll County.

Medeski, Martin & Wood A jazz ensemble that can get a concert crowd dancing? That may seem unlikely, but the self-described "groove music" trio Medeski, Martin & Wood has been doing just that for the past nine years of steady touring. It's also been cranking out album after album. Combining funk, hip-hop, blues, rock and avant-garde music, keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood offer their fans plenty of experimental live numbers, and have just released their latest album, "Tonic," a live acoustic set. The Glenelg High School Jazz Ensemble will hold its "Jazz Under the Stars" community picnic dinner and concert at 5 p.m. May 20 at Chapel View Farm in Woodbine. Families and friends can take lawn chairs and blankets and have a catered picnic dinner and hear the concert. Singer Deanna Bogart and the Glenelg Jazz Ensemble will perform. The cost is $30; $15 for children to age 12. Those younger than age 5 are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased online by May 16 at www.glenelgbands.com (click on the InstantSeats logo)
