Howard senior wide receiver Jeff Javier has played a big role in helping the Lions go from 2-8 last season to 7-1 this season. Javier and senior quarterback Jeff Kalski have connected 16 times for 300 yards and six touchdowns this season - including a 10-yard touchdown that helped the Lions get past Wilde Lake, 21-14, on Saturday. Equally important has been the leadership Javier has brought as one of the team's co-captains. He said the most important aspects he has learned about being a leader are putting the team ahead of individual accomplishments and communicating with each teammate in a positive tone.

The Black Keys have predictably sold out their show at the Verizon Center this Friday. But there's no need to pay a scalper or StubHub your life's savings for tickets. It's likely the band will return to the area this summer to play Merriweather Post Pavilion, says a reliable source with knowledge of the band's tour schedule. An announcement with the date is said to be forthcoming. Meanwhile, we've reached out to the band's reps for confirmation and we'll update when we hear back.  It would be the band's second recent appearance at Merriweather - they were one of the headliners at last year's Virgin Mobile FreeFest, where they gave one of the best performances of the night . They are on the road promoting new album "El Camino.

Injuries to players who may be part of the possible deal between the Orioles and San Francisco Giants eventually might kill any chance of the trade being made.According to National League sources, the Orioles and Giants discussed a trade that would have sent slugger Bobby Bonilla to San Francisco for catcher Kirt Manwaring, pitcher Mark Leiter and outfielder Stan Javier. However, on Tuesday night, Javier severely strained his right hamstring and was placed on the disabled list. The Giants said he'll be out three to four weeks, but Javier said after the game that he felt his hamstring pop and expects to be out longer than that.

Javier Vazquez's return to New York brings with it a certain amount of intrigue. But it also underscores this point: The Yankees again will be the team to beat in 2010. Good teams start with good starting pitching. And after trading for Vazquez and re-signing Andy Pettitte , the Yankees have more of it than any American League team. The group of CC Sabathia , A.J. Burnett , Pettitte and Vazquez matches up with the Giants' top-heavy rotation led by Tim Lincecum , which last season held hitters to a .234 average and struck out 8.2 per nine innings.

The so-called "neo-soul" field is already crowded with wannabe-smooth brothers who croon sweet nothings over hip-hop-laced grooves, injecting their sound with heavy Stevie Wonder-isms and Donny Hathaway inflections. A new artist, Javier (pronounced hav-e-air), wants to join the band, so to speak, with a sound that's warmly familiar. Like Glenn Lewis and Maxwell, he sets out to charm the ladies with ballads dripping passion. "I'm an easygoing kind of guy," says the singer, 25, calling from Los Angeles.

On the field: The Athletics' Stan Javier claimed to be hit by a pitch in the fourth inning, but replays showed that the ball hit Javier's bat. Javier writhed in apparent pain, then was awarded first base. Jamie Moyer then hit him in the back with a pickoff throw to first base.In the dugout: Moyer was removed after 3 1/3 innings, only the fifth time in 16 starts he has not gone five.In the clubhouse: "I don't buy 'bad luck.' To me, you make your own luck. Losers always say, 'It's bad luck.

Quote: "To be honest, I got lucky. I can't explain it or anything. It was just a lucky catch." - The Mariners' Stan Javier on his amazing, homer-saving catch against the Padres Sunday. In the seventh, Javier leaped and reached over the fence for a ball hit by Phil Nevin. The ball hit Javier's glove, but he couldn't hold it, though inadvertently flipping the ball back toward the field. As he fell to the ground, Javier looked up, saw the ball dropping, reached out his glove and caught it. It's a fact: It took the Giants just 25 home dates at Pacific Bell Park to reach 1 million in attendance, a total they weren't able to achieve in 11 of their seasons at Candlestick Park.

Ronald Simmont Sr. of Glen Burnie says he listens to NOAA Weather Radio every day, and he always hears the same voices: "How can this be? No matter what time I tune in, it's the same woman and guy giving the current conditions. Don't these people sleep?" They never do. They're computer-generated, text-to-speech synthetics. The lucious female voice is "Mara" (an upgraded "Donna"). The chipper male is "Tom." The Spanish-speaker is "Javier." Audio samples at weather.gov/nwr/newvoice.htm.

The movie version of Love in the Time of Cholera doesn't have the drive or the dynamism to be an artistic nightmare. It's more like a dead dream, the kind that leaves nothing more behind in the light of day than a sickly cloud. The director, Mike Newell, and the screenwriter, Ronald Harwood, have taken novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez's sustained flight of grand passion and analyzed the swooping life right out of it. They've thought their way into an adaptation that needed to be intuitive and "felt," like Marquez's mighty marvel of a book.

What began as a childhood game among three brothers now dazzles audiences in Varekai, the Cirque du Soleil show currently under the big top at Harbor Point. Javier Santos began learning the ancient art of foot-juggling from circus-performing family members when he was 5 years old, and was soon able to balance balls and chairs with his feet. As a teenager, the list of airborne objects expanded to include his 3-year-old twin brothers, Ramon and Pedro, who entertained themselves by jumping on Javier's feet.

Thirty-two-year-old Alejandro Amenabar, who made the Spanish hit thriller Open Your Eyes (1997) and the international hit thriller The Others (2001), has always been a precocious and brilliant director. With The Sea Inside he becomes a great one. The way Amenabar tells it, the story of Ramon Sampedro (Javier Bardem), a quadriplegic who fought for the right to die, illuminates and enriches a viewer's experience of life at all levels - physical, emotional, intellectual and imaginative. There were many good to excellent movies last year, but this and A Very Long Engagement are the only ones I would call masterpieces.
