Baseball's nonwaiver trade deadline is at 4 p.m. today, and the Orioles are still looking to add pieces -- a right-handed hitter and a pitcher are still on the priority list. Here are some updates on trade talk: Heading into Wednesday morning, the Orioles and Los Angeles Angels were not involved in active discussions involving left-hander Jason Vargas. The clubs have spoken in the past about Vargas, whom the Orioles have coveted for years. But nothing was hot this morning.

The Orioles' hope of adding a free-agent pitcher took a bit of a hit Thursday when left-hander Jason Vargas signed a four-year, $32 million deal with the Kansas City Royals. Vargas, 30, has been someone the Orioles have coveted for years - former pitching coach Rick Adair had Vargas in Seattle and loved the lefty. And so the Orioles made trade overtures in three different seasons to try and get Vargas, but never found a deal to their liking. That the Orioles didn't land Vargas in free agency shouldn't be disappointing for the club, however.

The Orioles announced two minor league signings today, and one is a familiar name. At least the last name is. The club signed 26-year-old infielder Sharlon Schoop , who is the older brother of the club's top infield prospect, 22-year-old Jonathan Schoop. The elder Schoop last played in 2012 with the Kansas City Royals' Double-A affiliate in Arkansas, hitting .267 with a .341 on-base percentage in 50 games. He is primarily a shortstop but has played all four infield positions and some corner outfield.

King of the Hill Orioles starter Rich Hill pitched seven scoreless innings, retiring the final 14 hitters he faced, and didn't allow a base runner after yielding a one-out single to Yuniesky Betancourt in the third. He had seven strikeouts and threw a season-high 106 pitches. Hill's outing gave the Orioles four consecutive quality starts, their most since they had six straight April 28-May 3 last season. Gifts that keep on giving Adam Jones and George Sherrill, both acquired in the trade with Seattle for Erik Bedard, factored in the outcome.

How it happened: The Orioles got on the board early, scoring a run in the top of the first on Nolan Reimold's RBI double. That, however, was their only run of the game as the offense managed just three hits off Seattle starter Jason Vargas in seven innings. The Mariners made them pay for their offense ineptitude, scoring twice in the bottom of the first and once more in the seventh. The Orioles wasted a quality start from David Hernandez, who surrendered three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two in 6 1/3 innings.

NEARLY PERFECT Only Nick Markakis' fourth-inning single to left field prevented Mariners veteran left-hander Jarrod Washburn from throwing a perfect game. Washburn retired the first 11 Orioles and the final 16 in the first one-hit shutout of his lengthy career. It was also the first one-hitter thrown by a Mariner in the 10-year history of Safeco Field. OUTDONE Orioles rookie Brad Bergesen didn't pitch poorly in suffering his first loss since May 19, but he did make two costly mistakes, allowing a solo homer to Russell Branyan in the first and a two-run double to Chris Woodward in the sixth.
