UNIVERSITY PARK -- Mike Busza scored three goals -- including the game-winner 32 seconds into overtime -- to lead Penn State (6-0) over UMBC (8-2), 12-11, yesterday.The Retrievers trailed through most of the first three quarters, but tied the game on a goal by Jason Smith with seven seconds left in the third period.UMBC took its first lead with 3:39 left in the game on a score by Tim Stecher, but Penn State tied the game on an unassisted goal by Chris Lehman with 44 seconds remaining.Jamie Batley and Steve Marohl led the Retrievers, combining for five goals and five assists.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Randy Colley scored five goals and had two assists to lead Notre Dame (5-0) to a 16-4 rout of UMBC (3-2), yesterday.Three of Colley's goals came in the first quarter, when Notre Dame built a 9-1 lead after 11 minutes and nine seconds.Kevin Mahoney added four goals for Notre Dame. Jason Smith led UMBC with two goals.The Irish out-shot the Retrievers 58-25 and won 18 of 24 faceoffs.It was the last of a three-game Midwest tour for UMBC, which beat Butler and lost to Michigan State earlier in the week.

Former Mount St. Joseph basketball standout Henry Sims has signed a 10-day contract with the New Orleans Hornets. Sims, who went undrafted after a four-year career at Georgetown, was playing in the NBA D-League for the Erie Bayhawks before signing with the Hornets. He averaged 17.1 points, 9 rebounds and 1.6 blocked shots for the Bayhawks and was named to the D-League All-Star Game. The Hornets lost center/forward Jason Smith for the season with a torn labrum, which prompted the signing for Sims.

After 10th-ranked Woodlawn's (7-0) 55-49 defeat of No. 13 Broadneck (4-1) in the semifinals of the Wes Unseld Holiday Tournament, the Warriors received a visit from Woodlawn alumnus and University of Maryland center Evers Burns.Burns' comment that this is the best team the school has had since he left drew laughs. After last night, he may be right.The Warriors will face No. 12 Edmondson in tonight's 8 p.m. championship. The Redskins (5-2) got 34 points from Randolph Edison and defeated No. 11 Loyola (6-5)

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Kevin Pehlke scored five goals to lead No. 7 Virginia to a 15-9 victory over UMBC in the Cavaliers' regular-season finale yesterday at Klockner Stadium.The Retrievers trailed 7-5 at halftime, and Pehlke (Calvert Hall) scored four third-quarter goals to give Virginia an 11-7 lead going into the final period.Jamie Batley led UMBC (6-7) with five goals to give him a team-high 61 points on the season. Jason Smith added two goals for the Retrievers to make him the sixth player in school history to reach 100 career goals.
