Jason D. Smith, a fundraiser for the John Carroll School in Bel Air who previously worked in development for the Kennedy Krieger Institute and the National Aquarium in Baltimore, died of brain cancer Aug. 21 while at his parents' home in Towson. The former Perry Hall resident was 27. Born in Utah and raised in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mount Lebanon, Mr. Smith was a graduate of Mount Lebanon High School, where he was honored as the top geography student. He graduated from American University in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in business and marketing.

The No. 9 Terps must win to solidify their fourth straight invitation to the NCAA tournament. UMBC has lost three straight, all to Top 10 teams. Attackmen Rob Chomo, Matt Parks and Mike Bordi account for 31 percent of the Terps' scoring. Senior attackman Jason Smith leads UMBC with 29 goals and 11 assists. Nonprofits Maryland Mentoring Partnership, which develops youth mentoring programs statewide, announced the appointment of Selwyn I. Ray as its executive director. Business Volunteers Unlimited Maryland named Nan Bambara as director of business relations. She is responsible for assisting members in building community relationships through strategic philanthropy and employee volunteerism.
